Amir Askari (born 1979) is an Iranian schema therapist, writer, and theorist known for his contributions to the field of schema therapy. He is particularly recognized for his book, New Concepts of Schema Therapy (The 6 Coping Styles), published in 2021, where he introduced three new coping styles—indolence, mockery, and gaucherie—as bio-psycho-evolutionary strategies. These additions complement the original three coping styles (surrender, avoidance, and overcompensation) identified by Jeffrey Young, the founder of schema therapy.[1].
Life and Education
editAmir Askari was born in 1979 in Tehran, Iran. He pursued higher education in clinical psychology at the University of Mysore in India, where he earned both his master's and Ph.D. degrees. Askari is certified as a supervisor, trainer, and advanced schema therapist by the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST)[2].
Career
editIn 2012, Amir Askari initiated the Development Project of Schema Therapy (DPST) in Iran, which is affiliated with the Center for Advanced Studies in Mental Health (CASMH)[3]. His efforts culminated in the founding of the Iranian Institute of Schema Therapy in 2019[4]. He currently serves as an executive board member of the Iranian Clinical Psychology Association (ICPA)[5].
Publications
editAmir Askari's significant work, New Concepts of Schema Therapy (The 6 Coping Styles), was published in 2021[6]. The book features a preface written by Jeffrey Young, the founder of schema therapy, and Wendy Behary, who served as the president of the ISST from 2010 to 2014. Additionally, Eckhard Rodeiger, president of the ISST from 2014 to 2016, contributed an introduction to the book. New Concepts of Schema Therapy has been translated and published in several languages, including English, Farsi, Spanish, and Ukrainian[7][8]
