Career

edit

Boscán's investigative work gained national attention when he led the reporting on the Caso Caminosca, an investigation that implicated Ecuador's then Vice President, Jorge Glas, in a corruption scandal.[1] This marked his first major involvement in exposing government misconduct, which would become a hallmark of his career.

In 2017, Boscán co-founded the digital media outlet La Posta alongside Luis Eduardo Vivanco. The platform quickly became known for its investigative journalism and political criticism. Under Boscán's leadership, the outlet conducted various investigations, including the series *El Ministerio de la Muerte*, which exposed irregularities in the Ministry of Health during the administration of President Lenín Moreno. These reports led to the dismissal of the then-Minister of Health, María Verónica Espinosa.[2]

Boscán's role in uncovering corruption continued with his involvement in the Odebrecht scandal. Working with a confidential source, he facilitated the largest leak related to the case, providing key documents to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ),[3] which convened dozens of journalists from 12 countries. This work earned Boscán and La Posta an Eppy Award for exposing the lies of Odebrecht to the judicial systems of the United States and Latin America.[4]

In 2020, Boscán broke the *Vacunados Gold* scandal, which exposed high-profile individuals, including politicians and public figures, who received early COVID-19 vaccinations intended for the elderly. The scandal led to the resignation of the Ecuadorian Health Minister, Juan Carlos Zevallos.[5]

Boscán and his wife, Mónica Velásquez, further documented the rise of violence within Ecuador's prison system through the docuseries *Paz o Plomo*. The series, which provided an in-depth look at organized crime within the country's correctional facilities, led to threats against the couple from criminal organizations. As a result, the Ecuadorian government granted them protection.[6]

In 2022, Boscán served as a special correspondent during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, producing a podcast that became one of Ecuador's most listened to during its release.[7][8]

In 2023, Boscán led the investigation into *El Gran Padrino*, also known as the *Caso Encuentro*, which uncovered a corruption and narcopolitics structure within the administration of President Guillermo Lasso. This investigation prompted a national broadcast by Lasso, who criticized Boscán and his wife publicly. Despite this, the investigation was named a finalist for the prestigious Gabo Awards, IAPA Awards and others.[9]

Finally, in 2024, following multiple death threats, Boscán and his family applied for asylum in Canada, seeking safety amid ongoing threats due to his investigative work.[10] Boscán shared his story through a podcast titled La Confesión de Boscán, which quickly became the most listened to podcast in Ecuador.

Controversies

edit

Boscán has faced criticism for his alleged conversations with Ecuadorian narcotrafficker Leandro Norero, a prominent figure linked to organized crime. Critics argue that Boscán's interactions with Norero, prior to his arrest and eventual death, raise questions about the journalist's knowledge of criminal activities. In his defense, Boscán has stated that the conversations were part of his journalistic work to uncover deeper truths within Ecuador's criminal underworld, and he has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
