Animal Welfare Society is a non-profit humane society located in Kennebunk, Maine. Known locally as AWS, the organization was founded in 1967, by Elmina B.Sewall and Donald Shepard, as a place for local stray dogs and cats to be safely dropped off. In AWS' first year, approximately 300 dogs and cats were adopted into new homes.
AWS celebrated its 50th year of operations in 2017 with a gala and a birthday carnival on site. Staff estimated at that more than 150,000 animals had been helped by AWS in its first 50 years. AWS continues to serve the Southern Maine community by housing lost and stray pets and providing resources to pet owners in the community. Programs and services include dog training, veterinary care, temporary boarding, pet food pantry, youth education, animal transport, pet adoption and more. In 2023, AWS states that it supports the health and welfare of more than 10,000 pets - and pet families - each year.
Animal Welfare Society's mission is to serve as the safety net for lost and homeless pets and to provide access to affordable services and resources necessary for long term well-being, so pets and their families stay together and thrive.
