Antarctic Film Festival is an international film festival which is held annually among members of the Antarctica Research Stations.[1] It is often seen as the southern counterpart to the Arctic Film Festival which is held in the Norwegian archipelago and the northernmost film festival in the world.
The festival
editFilm entries for the festival are only open for the members of research stations. Antarctic Film Festival open to all of the research stations in Antarctica.[2] The festival began in 2006 with the participation of two stations, McMurdo and Scott base in Antarctica. Antarctic Film Festival is organized under two categories, 48-Hour Challenge and Open Challenge. The festival requires research stations to create a film over one weekend in August and the film has to be recorded in a 48 hour period and must contain five 'elements' nominated by other stations.[3] The candidate films must adhere short film standards.[4] The festival takes place over a weekend in early August.[5]
As of 2024, research stations from 20 countries have participated in the festival. Antarctica hosts research activities from 55 countries with 70 permanent research stations.[6]
