Anna Zavgorodnaya (born 10 May 2002), known professionally as Anya Nami is a Russian musician best known for her 2024 singles Bread and No One Better. Before reaching success under the name Anya Nami, she previously performed under the name ANAZED starting in 2020.
Early Life
editAnna Zavgorodnaya was born in Moscow, Russia in 2002. As a child, she excelled at piano performing in various concerts and competitions. However, she stopped playing around age ten, citing a growing dislike for the instrument, only to return to it at fifteen.[1][2]
Zavgorodnaya attended Moscow State University and studied politics
Influences
editZavgorodnaya grew up listening to Mike Oldfield and Queen (band) with her father[2]. In an interview for Pure M Magazine, an Irish based media outlet, she said that she was influenced by artists such as "Adele, Billie Eilish (obviously), Trentemøller, Caravan Palace, Green Day, Melanie Martinez mostly."[1]
Career
editAnya Nami debuted in 2023 with the release of her debut single, Unsubstantial, in collaboration with a Los Angeles record label, Godwyn Records. This track quickly caught the attention of listeners and critics. It garnered widespread acclaim from streaming service editors, earning coveted placements on prominent playlists in the industry, including Spotify’s ‘Pop Sauce,’ ‘Salt,’ ‘New Pop Picks,’ and ‘Fresh Finds.’ These placements helped propel her into the spotlight, introducing her to a much wider audience and establishing her as an emerging artist to watch.[3][4]
Key Moments
editFollowing her new found success, Nami released other titles such as Will I Ever Love? and Wake Me Up. On the 23rd of February 2024, Nami collaborated with Mexican pianist, Gibran Alcocer on Idea 22, which expanded her audience and furthered her international acclaim [3]
Her most successful release to date was the single Bread released on the 5th of April 2024. In her interview with Pure M Magazine, Nami described the song as inspired by her experience in Paris, where she had "the best baguette with butter known to mankind." She said that, "I just wanted to write something easy, light, and with French references... What’s the dumbest thing this song could possibly be about?"[1]
