Archil Gelovani (Georgian: არჩილ გელოვანი; born December 15, 1974) is a Georgian film producer. Archil produced Georgian and international co-productions that were shown at Cannes,[1] Rotterdam, Edinburgh[2] among others. In 2023, he became a member of the European Film Academy.[3]

Among awards and nominations won by his films - Official Georgian selection to the 2008 Academy Awards,[4] Best Foreign Language Film category and Special Jury Prize at MIFF 2008,[5] Golden Lily for Best Film 2010 at Wiesbaden GoEast 2010,[6] Grand Prix at Split Film Festival 2011.[7] Nomination at Locarno Film Festival 2011, Un Certain Regard at Cannes Film Festival 2011,[8] Tiger Award at International Film Festival Rotterdam 2010, 2012.[9][10]

In 2021 "for his special contribution to the protection and preservation of the cultural heritage of Georgia and for his support of Georgian culture" Archil Gelovani was awarded the President's Order of Excellence by Salome Zourabichvili.[11]

Early life

Gelovani was born on 15 December 1974 in the city of Moscow. His father, Victor Gelovani, is a researcher in applied mathematics, computer technology, and mathematical modeling fields. He holds the position of Academician within the Academy of Sciences and has the title of Doctor of Technology. His mother, Nana Anjaparidze, is a cardiologist.[12]

In 1991 Archil enrolled in the Faculty of International Law at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations.

In 1994, he decided to move to the United States. He continued his studies at Harvard University and subsequently at Boston University.[13]

Career in cinema

Starting in 2006, Archil began working in the movie industry.

From September 2009 to September 2011, Gelovani was a Chief executive officer[14] at the Georgian Film Studio. During his tenure, he has worked with the studio's historical legacy, restoring the archives of its "golden fund".[15]

Independent Film Project

In 2006, Archil created the production company Independent Film Project. The company focuses on international co-productions in high-end auteur-driven cinema, premium series, and documentaries of socially significant context.[16]
