Architectural Thinking School for Children — an interdisciplinary supplementary education project for children, teenagers, and families, aimed at developing thinking similar to that used by contemporary architects in their work, architectural thinking. The project was founded in 2016 by architect Alexander Novikov and artist and critic of arts Elena Karpilova.
Unlike other educational projects, the School provides a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the method and mindset of a modern architect, offering a seven-year educational program along with additional educational activities. Each lesson in the program has a detailed lesson plan, and the School has its own unique methodology, documented in guides and manuals, along with a structured plan for the professional development of teachers. This is why the project is called a "school": it takes a serious approach to the educational process, focusing on both student and teacher development, as well as the overall promotion and advancement of quality of architectural education among children and youth.
From 2016 to 2020, the School operated exclusively offline in Minsk, Belarus. Since 2020 till now it introduces online courses as well. Starting in June 2022, it has been operating in Lisbon, Portugal, in partnership with Portuguese cultural institutions, with the majority of students coming from post-Soviet regions. The School is known for turning all lessons and programs into tangible, real-world projects, such as Foreign Pavilion for the 2024 Venice Biennale, short films, books, comics, and more.
The goal of the School is to develop a wide range of skills and abilities so that children from an early age understand the diversity and breadth of the world and get acquainted with various fields of activity. For this purpose, the School has coined the term "architectural thinking"—the interdisciplinary thinking used by contemporary architects when creating projects, considering numerous factors, and striving to solve people's problems.
Curriculum
editThe School's inter- and cross disciplinary program is designed in such a way that it intertwines various disciplines, fields, and specialties. As a result, children do not spend a long time studying one specific subject. Instead, they are introduced to a subject, gain an understanding of it, and then apply that knowledge to create a complex and cohesive project. This approach is consistent across all courses and terms of the School. For example, in the "Architecture" term, within the course "Systems Thinking," children study the language of contemporary choreography in one of the final lessons to use body language to express the form of a building they have designed for that lesson.
To ensure efficient and rapid immersion in each subject, classes are taught by practicing professionals—invited tutors who do not primarily focus on teaching but are willing to share their expertise. Preparatory pedagogical training is conducted with each tutor, as the School's principle of inclusivity of knowledges, explaining complex concepts in simple terms, requires specialists to understand the unique characteristics of working with specific age groups and their cognitive specifics.
The School's program does not aim to prepare children for architectural education. Firstly, because at this age (6-14 years), it is not appropriate, and the School, on the contrary, aims to use architecture and architectural thinking to broaden children's horizons and showcase as many environments and professions as possible. Secondly, because the School focuses on developing thinking skills that students can apply in any field they choose in the future.
The program includes many activities related to various forms of art: children make films, create music and video clips, produce books, and more. However, there are also activities related to ecology, political science, sociology, and other sciences that are necessary to enrich the theme and main project of each term.
The School's program has been presented at various international conferences and received widespread positive feedback. Many have compared it to the comprehensive Bauhaus curriculum.
