Arkhip Georgievich Dzhioev (Iron Ossetic: Dzhioty Geyargiyi fyrt Arkhip; 1896 — 12 November 1937) was an Ossetian revolutionary, commander of partisan detachments in South Ossetia during the 1918–1921 period, a participant in the establishment of Soviet power in South Ossetia and Georgia, and later a militia official. He is regarded as a national hero of the Ossetian people.[1] He was a victim of the Great Purge in 1937.[2]
Biography
[edit]Early life and revolutionary activity
[edit]Arkhip Dzhioev was born in 1896 in South Ossetia into a peasant family. His exact place of birth and early childhood details are not documented in available sources. He joined the Bolsheviks in 1918 and actively participated in the revolutionary movement in South Ossetia.[2]
During the Georgian-Ossetian war (1918-1921), Dzhioev commanded a partisan detachment. In the summer of 1918, during the Soviet invasion of Georgia, he led a partisan detachment through the Mamison Pass into Western Georgia. According to the memoirs of his fellow commander Alexander (Toto) Gagloev, Dzhioev was appointed commander of an independent detachment, while the overall military leadership was exercised by Alexander Dzhioev.[3] His detachment fought in the Sachkheri region against the Menshevik forces, participating in the Battle of Sachkheri and the proclamation of Soviet power in the area.
Later career, arrest and execution
[edit]After the establishment of Soviet power in South Ossetia, Dzhioev continued his service. By 1937, he held the position of Chief of Militia of the Znaur District of South Ossetia.[1]
On 12 March 1937, Dzhioev was arrested as part of a case involving an alleged underground organization. He was convicted by judge Kobalia and sentenced to death by firing squad. The sentence was carried out on 12 November 1937.[1]
His name appears in the Stalinist execution lists from Georgia, and he is listed in the memorial database of victims of political repression.[2]
Memory

- He is regarded as a national hero of the Ossetian people.[1]
- His name is included in the lists of victims of Stalinist repressions maintained by the Memorial human rights society.[4]
