The Ball State Cardinals women's volleyball team competes as part of NCAA Division I, representing Ball State University in the Mid-American Conference. Ball State plays its home games at the John E. Worthen Arena. As of 2023, the Cardinals have a record of 316-96 (.767) against opponents in Worthen Arena.[2] Ball State is one of only forty-four schools with over 1,000 program wins.[3]
The team has been coached by Kelli Miller Phillips since 2016.
Coaching History
editBarbara Curcio (1972–75 & 1977-82)
editBarbara Curcio was hired in 1972, and she led the program's first season of varsity competition. Curcio compiled an 240-139-2 record over ten seasons, including AIAW tournament appearance's in 1973 and 1977.[4]
Gail Webster (1976–77)
editGail Webster was head coach of the Cardinals for the 1976 season. Webster compiled a 24-14 record in her one season at the helm.
Jerre McManama (1983-1988)
editJerre McManama was hired in 1983 and was head coach until 1988. McManama compiled a 70-85 record over six seasons.
Randy Litchfield (1989-2006)
editRandy Litchfield was hired in 1989. During his tenure, the Cardinals rose to regional and national prominence. Over Litchfields' eighteen seasons, he compiled a record of 373-179. His only losing season came in 2006. Under his guidance, Ball State appeared in seven NCAA tournaments, won six conference championships, and won seven regular season championships
Dave Boos (2007-2009)
editDave Boos was hired as the fifth head coach in program history. Over his three years at the helm, Boos compiled a record of 32-62. In 2010, Boos resigned from the position of head coach.[5]
Steve Shondell (2010-2015)
editIn 2010, Ball State hired, Steve Shondell as head coach. Prior to Ball State, Shondell was head coach of the Burris Laboratory School in Muncie, Indiana for thirty-four years. During his tenure at Burris, Shondell amassed a 1,220-102 record, won four national championships, and won 21 Indiana State Volleyball Championships.[6]
Over his six seasons as head coach of the Cardinals, Shondell compiled a 119-68 record. Shondell also lead the Cardinals to a conference regular season title and an at-large NCAA tournament bid. He was named the Mid-American Conference coach of the year in 2010.[7]
Shondell retired from the position of head coach in 2016 and was replaced by his assistant coach, Kelli Miller Phillips.
Shondell is the son of the distinguished men's volleyball coach, [Don Shondell]] and Shondell's brother, Dave Shondell, is the current head coach of the Purdue University women's volleyball team.
