Barnabás György Szabó (born October 9, 1981) is a Hungarian-born economist and investor specializing in the stock market, real estate, and venture capital. He currently resides in Singapore.
Early Life and Education
editSzabó was born in Keszthely, Hungary. He attended Pannonhalma Benedictine High School[1], regarded as one of the leading secondary schools in Hungary.[2] He pursued higher education at Corvinus University of Budapest[3], earning both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in economics. During his university years, he was a member of one of Hungary's most prestigious academic societies, the Széchenyi István College for Advanced Studies. Since 2008, he has been a member of Mensa HungarIQa, the Hungarian chapter of Mensa, a non-profit organization for individuals with high IQs.
Career
editSzabó began his career in the early 2000s, founding his first company while still a university student in 2001. In 2004, he established AMEA[4], a company focused on business valuation and venture capital investments. In 2008, he founded ARTEON INVEST, a securities brokerage firm that operated for nearly four years.[5] In 2012, Szabó co-founded ALTERA, an alternative asset management company, which was listed on the Budapest Stock Exchange in 2013.[6][7][8][9] Szabó exited the company in 2017, which still operates on the Budapest Stock Exchange under the name AutoWallis, as part of the Wallis Group.[10]
Currently, Szabó is the head of AWM Holding Plc.[11], a company established in 2010 that specializes in wholesale trade and asset management, particularly in capital market investments and the trade of electronic components such as microchips. The company is headquartered in Budaörs, Hungary. Szabó divides his time between Hungary and Singapore, where he is involved in establishing a technology investment company.
Szabó's investment focus has recently been on American and Asian startups. His portfolio includes investments in companies such as Addepar, a financial technology company, and Postmates, a U.S. food delivery service acquired by Uber in 2020. He has also invested in online education provider Udacity and rideshare company Uber. In 2021, Szabó realized significant returns from investments in Postmates and Addepar, with returns of 2.28x and 2.91x, respectively.[12]
Recognition
editSzabó placed in the top 10 in the WorldTopInvestor stock market competition, achieving ninth place among approximately 1,000 traders from 19 countries, with a return of 27.29% over one year.[13]
Educational Activity
editSzabó has engaged in educational activities throughout his career, teaching at various institutions. His roles have included mentoring at Budapest Business School's Team Academy program in 2019, serving on the scholarship committee and as a trainer for the Moholy-Nagy Design Scholarship[14] at the National Intellectual Property Office from 2018 to 2021, and providing business skills training for artists at WERK Academy in 2017[15]. He has also been involved in experimental mentoring programs at Moholy-Nagy University[16] of Art and Design and business development courses at Saint Ignatius Jesuit College. Additionally, he has served as an instructor in the START mentor program[17][18][19][20] by the Hungarian Fashion & Design Agency. He regularly writes about economic topics[21], and his opinion pieces have been published on multiple platforms.
Szabó and AWM Holding Plc. emphasize corporate social responsibility, supporting various foundations and initiatives through financial and material contributions. Szabó has also personally contributed by conducting seminars[23]. Supported organizations include the Beregszász Hospital via the Johannita Helping Service, RÉS Social and Cultural Foundation, the Hungarian Handball Association, and several educational and sports foundations.
