Benedikt Sobotka is a German business executive known for his roles in the mining and renewable energy sectors. He has worked in management positions in the mining industry and venture capital.

Business career

Sobotka served as CEO of Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) from January 2014 to October 2024 [1]. During his tenure, ERG was involved with international organisations including the World Economic Forum, the United Nations Global Compact, and the Cobalt Institute[2]. He also served as Co-Chair of the Global Battery Alliance (GBA)[3].

In 2020, Sobotka founded Alpha Future Funds, a venture capital firm based in Luxembourg [4]. The firm invests in sectors including energy, sustainability, artificial intelligence, robotics, digitalisation, and mining equipment and services. Portfolio investments have included companies such as Quello, Sensore[5], and TIMining.

Industry Contributions

Sobotka has been involved in several industry initiatives related to mining and sustainable energy. He co-founded Minerals Value Service, an analytics tool for the iron ore industry which was acquired by Platts [6], and Advanced Membrane Systems, a nanofiltration company.

Benedikt is also a Founding Member of ReSource, a joint blockchain initiative of battery supply chain majors[7]. Sobotka has discussed challenges in raw material supply[11], describing commodity markets as facing significant pressures due to under-investment, supply shocks, and logistical challenges[12][13][14].

Sobotka co-authored "China Champions: How German companies can successfully integrate China into their global strategies"[15], a Financial Times top 10 Bestseller, focusing on successful strategies for investment in China.

Community engagement

Under Sobotka's leadership, ERG invested in community projects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including school construction and initiatives addressing child labour [16].

Early life and education

Benedikt Sobotka was born in 1980 in Cologne, Germany[17]. He holds an MA in Management from WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management, and has also studied at the Rotterdam School of Management, CEIBS Shanghai, and the Moscow Finance Academy.
