Birthlink is an adoption records charity based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It administers the Scottish Adoption Contact Register which gathers the details of adoptees and birth parents to facilitate reunions.

History

edit

Birthlink was founded in November 1911 as the Eastern Division of the Scottish National Vigilance Association, aiming to protect vulnerable woman and girls from the White Slave Trade.[1] In 1941, it changed its name to The Guild of Service.[citation needed] In 1946, it opened Edzell Lodge, a children's home based in Inverleith, Edinburgh.[2]. The home closed in 1984.[3]

In 1954, the organisation registered as an adoption agency.[citation needed]

In 1962, Janet Lusk became the director of The Guild of Service, and under her in 1978, the organisation changed its name to Family Care[4]. In 1984, Family Care launched the Adoption Contact Register and Birthlink, both intended to allow adoptees to contact their birth parents.[citation needed] It continues to operate this service today.

In 1985, Family Care opened No. 20, a day care for mothers and children in Muirhouse.[5]

In 2007, the organisation was renamed Birthlink to better represent the organisation's function.[citation needed]

Charity Shops

edit

Birthlink runs two charity shops in Edinburgh. The first opened in 1957 and is considered to be the oldest in Scotland.[6]
