blindGram is an unofficial Android client for Telegram designed for blind and low-vision users. It was developed in Kashan, Iran, and released in 2017.[1][2]
History
[edit]The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported that three software and information-technology students created blindGram after learning about difficulties a blind person encountered while using Telegram. According to IRNA, the first version took 15 days to develop. During early testing, 54 percent of the 510 members of Kashan's association for blind people used the application.[1]
A second IRNA report described blindGram as an adaptation of Telegram for use with Android screen readers such as TalkBack. At that time, four beta versions had been released.[3] Filterwatch, a project of Small Media, later discussed blindGram in a report about how Iran's 2018 Telegram ban affected marginalized communities, describing it as a Telegram fork developed around the needs of visually impaired users.[2]
In 2020, the newspaper Iran Sepid reported that blindGram had not received an update for several months following the blocking of Telegram in Iran. Its report described complaints from blind users about compatibility problems and included an interview with one of the developers about plans to resume updates.[4]
Accessibility and reception
[edit]IRNA reported that blindGram exposed Telegram messages and interface controls to Android screen readers, allowing blind users to navigate the service through spoken feedback.[3]
A December 2017 hands-on comparison published by the Iranian blind-community website Mahalle-ye Nabinaian evaluated blindGram alongside another accessible Telegram client, Telelight. The reviewer wrote that user feedback had resolved many of blindGram's early accessibility problems, while criticizing the order in which message-status information was announced, louder chat sounds, and emoji that lacked spoken labels.[5]
