Bluacs (also Blueprint Acoustics Pty Ltd) is an audio research and development company specialising in loudspeaker system design.[1] Bluacs was founded in Melbourne, Australia, and operates facilities in Billdal, Sweden.[1]

History

Bluacs was founded in 2009 by Zeljko (Zel) Velican following earlier work on low-frequency speaker systems with Whise Acoustics, with designs licensed to Alpine Electronics’ UK operations for use in vehicles including the Volvo V70 and Jaguar XJ.[1]

Bluacs was established as a research and development company focused on intellectual property management and the licensing of audio technologies across automotive, consumer and professional applications.[1]

The Fresh Air Speaker technology was first licensed to Alpine Electronics in 2011.[1]

In 2015, a patent for a loudspeaker assembly and system invented by Zel Velican on behalf of Blueprint Acoustics was featured in Voice Coil magazine's Acoustic Patents column.[2]

In 2016, the system was reported to be installed in models including the Volvo XC90 and S90, Land Rover Discovery and Honda Pilot.[1]

In 2025, Bluacs joined the Audio Foundry collaborative platform and licensed its Fresh Air Speaker technology to Tymphany.[3]

Fresh Air Speaker®

The Fresh Air Speaker (FAS) is an automotive subwoofer design that uses the vehicle body and cabin volume as part of the acoustic enclosure rather than relying on a conventional boxed subwoofer design.[4]

Coverage of Volvo’s 2011 Concept You vehicle in What Hi-Fi? described the system as interacting with the surrounding air via the car's boundary, effectively allowing the atmosphere to function as an external enclosure.[5]

A 2021 audioXpress analysis characterised the design as trading conventional bandpass enclosure function for low-frequency performance, noting that the approach could reduce enclosure size by as much as 80 percent compared with traditional subwoofer systems.[6]

A 2025 feature in StereoNET described the implementation as a bandpass system mounted within the vehicle structure that uses the car body as an infinite baffle, and noted that Bluacs operates primarily as a business-to-business technology licensor rather than a consumer speaker manufacturer.[4]

At CES 2026, MotorTrend reported on Bluacs’ collaboration with Tymphany and Audio Foundry on firewall-mounted and headrest-based applications of the technology.[7]
