Bob Massie (born 10 December 1960) is a British television executive and producer who has held senior roles including Director of Entertainment at ITV, Head of Entertainment at IMG and Head of Television at 19 Entertainment, the production company founded by Simon Fuller.
During his career Massie has overseen the production, commissioning or development of hundreds of hours of entertainment programming broadcast in the United Kingdom and internationally. While at ITV he was responsible for more than 300 hours of programming annually. He later established the television entertainment division at IMG, growing it into an international production business with annual revenues exceeding €14 million.
Massie is also the creator of the entertainment format I'd Do Anything, which has been produced in more than 40 countries worldwide and was originally hosted by Ian Wright for the BBC.
Early life and journalism
[edit]Massie was born in Hammersmith, London.
He began his career in journalism in the early 1980s, working as a reporter for regional newspapers before joining national titles including The Guardian and The Sun. He later moved into broadcasting as a reporter and producer for BBC Radio before transitioning into television production.
Television career
[edit]London Weekend Television and London News Network
[edit]Massie joined London Weekend Television in the mid-1980s as a researcher in factual programming and later became an associate producer and deputy editor.
In the early 1990s he was part of the founding editorial team that helped establish London News Network.
The Big Breakfast
[edit]In 1995 Massie became executive producer of The Big Breakfast for the independent production company Planet 24. The Channel 4 programme became one of the most prominent breakfast television programmes in the United Kingdom during the 1990s.
ITV
[edit]Massie later joined ITV, initially as an executive producer within ITV Productions. He subsequently became Head of Entertainment and Deputy Controller of Entertainment, overseeing more than 300 hours of programming annually and leading a team of more than 200 staff.
Programmes produced or commissioned during this period included Blind Date, Popstars and Friday Night's All Wright.
IMG
[edit]In 2002 Massie joined IMG as Senior Vice President and Head of Entertainment. He established the company’s television entertainment division and developed it into an international production business with an annual turnover exceeding €14 million.
Programming developed during this period included I'd Do Anything, Superstars and Ant & Dec's All Star Cup.
19 Entertainment
[edit]Massie later joined 19 Entertainment as Head of Television. The company, founded by Simon Fuller, is known for global entertainment franchises including American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance.
During his tenure he executive produced the documentary David Beckham: New Beginnings, following footballer David Beckham during his move from Real Madrid to LA Galaxy, and Spice Girls: Giving You Everything, about the reunion of the pop group Spice Girls.
September Films and Massive TV
[edit]Massie later became Head of Entertainment at September Films, working on the development and sale of entertainment formats for UK and international broadcasters.
He also founded the television consultancy Massive TV, advising production companies, broadcasters and media organisations including The Walt Disney Company and FIFA.
