Brian Vinh Tran Nguyen is an American attorney and the managing partner of the law firm Universal Law Group, PLLC in Houston, Texas. His practice focuses primarily on criminal defense and personal injury cases. He has previously served as an Assistant District Attorney and co-founded the law firm Nguyen & Chen LLP.
Early Life and Education
editNguyen was born in Long Beach, California, and raised in Midland, Texas. He attended Robert E. Lee High School, which was also attended by former U.S. President George W. Bush and actor Tommy Lee Jones.[1] After graduating high school, he enrolled early at the University of Southern California as a pre-med student but later shifted his focus to law, earning his Juris Doctor from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law in 2004.[2]
Career
editFollowing his graduation from law school, Nguyen began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney, where he handled cases across CPS, mental health, misdemeanor, felony, and juvenile dockets.[3] After leaving the District Attorney's office in 2007, Nguyen joined a prominent labor and employment firm in Houston.
In 2011, he co-founded the Houston law firm Nguyen & Chen LLP, where he represented clients in personal injury, criminal defense, and business litigation cases.[1] In 2023, he joined Universal Law Group, PLLC as the managing partner, overseeing the firm's criminal defense and personal injury divisions.[4]
Notable Cases
editNguyen has represented clients in several high-profile cases. In one such case, he defended a Houston nurse who was initially charged with the murder of her husband. The case was dismissed after further investigation revealed there was insufficient evidence to support the charges.[5][6]
In 2023, Nguyen was involved in a legal dispute with his former business partner, Fan Chen, with matters relating to the dissolution of their former partnership at Nguyen & Chen LLP.[7][8]
