Bumblebee Spaces was a San Francisco-based company that developed robotic furniture and ceiling-mounted storage systems for apartments and compact homes.[1][2][3]

The company developed motorized ceiling systems capable of lowering beds, desks, wardrobes, and storage compartments into living spaces when needed.[1][4][3]

History

Bumblebee Spaces was founded in 2017 by Sankarshan Murthy, Garrett Rayner, and Prahlad Athreya.[3] Murthy previously worked at Apple and Tesla.[2][5]

Early coverage of the company described its approach as using unused ceiling space as a third dimension for furniture and storage.[6][1]

In 2019, the company raised Series A funding led by NTT Ventures, with participation from investors including Toyota AI Ventures, Valor Equity Partners, Sound Ventures, and Norwest Venture Partners.[7][3]

In 2019, Bloomberg News covered Bumblebee Spaces as part of IKEA's startup accelerator program focused on future housing and furniture concepts.[8]

The company primarily partnered with residential developers, while also completing retrofit installations in private residences.[3] Business Insider reported that one San Francisco apartment project used Bumblebee Spaces systems so that two-bedroom apartments could function as three-bedroom apartments.[3]

According to The New Yorker, Bumblebee Spaces installed systems in more than thirty residential buildings internationally, including developments in New York City, Canada, Germany, and Japan.[2]

In 2020, Bloomberg News reported that former Apple executives Steve Zadesky and Nick Forlenza joined Bumblebee Spaces as advisers, alongside former Apple industrial designer Rico Zorkendorfer, who served as lead design adviser.[9]

Inc. described the company as part of a broader effort to address urban housing constraints through automated furniture and storage systems.[10]

In 2023, The New Yorker reported that Bumblebee Spaces had ceased operations after being unable to secure additional funding.[2]

Technology

Bumblebee Spaces developed ceiling-mounted robotic furniture systems intended to reduce the amount of floor space required for furniture and storage.[1][4][3]

The systems used motorized platforms, sensors, cameras, and inventory-tracking software to store and retrieve household items.[3][2]

Furniture modules included beds, storage compartments, wardrobes, desks, and shelving systems that could descend from the ceiling when needed and retract upward when not in use.[1][3][2]

The systems could be controlled by a mobile app or voice command.[1][3]

Business Insider reported that the furniture modules were classified as fixtures, furniture, and equipment rather than being built into the structure of a home.[3]

The company also developed software for tracking stored objects. Business Insider reported that in-module cameras could show users where items were located inside storage compartments, while The New Yorker described a system for inventorying items placed into storage cubes.[3][2]

The systems incorporated safety features intended to stop movement if people or objects were detected beneath descending modules.[1][3][2]

In 2022, The Wall Street Journal described Bumblebee Spaces as a company operating in the robotic furniture market.[12]

The New Yorker later covered Bumblebee Spaces in a 2023 feature about ceiling-mounted robotic furniture and reported on the company's closure.[2]
