Charles "Charlie" Duncan Green V (born May 10, 1999), known online as CG5, is an American singer-songwriter, music producer, and YouTuber. He is known for his nerdcore hip-hop songs about popular topics such as video games, creepypastas, memes, etc. As of January 2024, Green has amassed over 2 billion views across all his channels and 2.1 million monthly streams on Spotify.
Personal life
editCharlie has worked with music for 20 years[2] and lives in Phoenix, Arizona with roommates. He has three siblings; Matilda, Jonah, and Silas. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints[3]. He also has autism spectrum disorder[4], obsessive-compulsive disorder, and scoliosis.
Career
editWhen Green was 5 years old, he started producing music on his computer with a digital audio workstation called Hip-Hop eJay 4.[5] On August 5, 2012, he made a YouTube channel simply called Charlie Green and uploaded his first original song on the same day titled What is A Dream. Green calls himself CG5 in the videos, which means the initials of his name and generation. Green initially started making original songs, then shifted to acoustic song covers. A majority of videos have been made private by Green which he revealed during his 4 million subscriber stream.
On October 18, 2014, Green created the channel CG5 where he posts remixes of popular songs and video game music. He revealed his face and voice to the channel in June 23, 2016 when he released the trap remix called 'MERICA. On October 26, 2016, Green released his first single Fantasized. On November 26, 2015, Green created another channel also called Charlie Green (now known as CG5LIVE). The channel focused more on gaming content, challenge videos, comedy sketches, Q&As, and random short videos.
On May 7, 2017, Green released his first song in the nerdcore hip-hop subgenre called Can I Get An Amen (alternatively called Amen), based on the 2017 hit video game Bendy and the Ink Machine. His song became popular in the game's community which resulted in Green releasing 2 more songs on the game, titled Horror Show and Spotlight. On August 30, 2017, he released a remix-cover of I Got No Time by The Living Tombstone, based on Five Nights at Freddy's 4, which is Green's most viewed video on his channel with over 108 million views. With his newfound success from the CG5 channel, he decided to switch over and abandon Charlie Green with a final video.
When the CG5 channel gained popularity, The 2nd Charlie Green channel was repurposed to include behind-the-scenes videos of his songs, and edited-down videos of his streams on Twitch. Later on, the channel would be renamed to CG5LIVE. On January 16, 2020, Green started another channel called "CG5 Instrumentals"[6]. This channel consists of posting instrumentals or no-vocal versions of his songs. The videos' thumbnails usually consist of the same thumbnail of the respective music video, with a grayscale filter applied and the text "INSTRUMENTAL" at the bottom.
Around 2019, Green was approached by Atlantic Records to audition a song for the movie's soundtrack for Scoob!. The song did not make the final cut. However, the song would later be finished and released on March 9, 2020 as Mystery Machine.
On July 1, 2022, CG5 sang the USA National Anthem for the Red Sox in the Wrigley Field.[7]
On September 8, 2022, Charlie collaborated with Salem Ilese and released the song "MINION". The song is based on the internet meme Gentleminions, where people would dress up in proper attire to watch the animated film, Minions: The Rise of Gru.
On March 24, 2023, Charlie released his song "Out of My Mind", which the music video features Cheyenne Jackson.[8]
On May 5, 2023, Charlie collaborated with award-winning Davie Archuleta and released the song "IDONTUNDERSTAND".[9]
Reception
editAbsolutely Anything
editOn December 25, 2017, Green collaborated with OR3O (Euria Sin) and released another Bendy and the Ink Machine song called Absolutely Anything. Around 2020, the song became massively popular on TikTok. On January 11, 2020, Spinning Records remade and redistributed the song, making it Green's first commercial success. On March 27, 2019, Green released his first album called Patiently. The album consists of 8 original songs based on his love experiences. The debut song Love Isn't Fair originated from a TikTok video by Green where he made a demo to the style of Charlie Puth's music.
Dream SMP
editGreen was most relevant in the Dream SMP community for his collection of songs based on the story. Green started in January 2021 with I See A Dreamer, based on Dream's Manhunt series. He later released songs of the Dream SMP or about the server's members, with songs in order, Gone Away, tommy innit, Vibrant Eyes, Injustice, and Lonely King. He has also collaborated with members from the server to make songs, such as Life By The Sea and MUFFIN.
Everybody Told Me That I Sound Like CG5
editOn January 27, 2023, LeGrand collaborated with CG5 and released the song "give a little"[10]. LeGrand would post a promotional video with a remix of the song explaining how he gained contact with CG5[11]; the line going "Everybody told me that I sound like CG5, what they didn't know is that his studio is just a couple miles from mine." CG5 would post a video on his TikTok account; however, he changed the line to, "Everybody told me that I sound like CG5, probably because I am CG5." The sound became incredibly popular on TikTok and is primarily used to remind viewers of a popular role of a person.[12]
Meme songs
editGreen has created meme songs ever since he started CG5. However, he became infamous for his meme songs after releasing Only in Ohio, a song based off the meme of the same name. The song was not taken lightly and people were quick to make fun of the song, starting what would be a massive hate wave on Green. On July 2023, Green released GRIMACE, based off the Grimace Shake trend. This song would also be made fun of and is what started the trend of CG5 killing memes once he made songs on them.
Some meme songs did have some positive reception, such as on July 2023 when he released THX, a song based on Skibidi Toilet. On September 2023, Green released BRO, a rant song commentating on mob mentality while also basing it off the Bro Skull meme. The hate gathered from Green's meme songs significantly affected his mental health, him stating that the hate he gets is forced and greatly exaggerated. Haters went as far as to pressure Green to make songs on very offensive memes.
