CJ Express
editCJ Express Group Co., Ltd. is a convenience store chain based in Thailand. Established in 2005 under the company PSD Rukthai Co., Ltd., it initially operated as a wholesale store in Ratchaburi before evolving into a hybrid convenience store and supermarket, focusing on providing consumer goods at comfortable and reasonable prices. In 2013, Carabao Group's founder, Sathien Setthasit (Thai: เสถียร เศรษฐสิทธิ์ ), acquired a majority stake, leading to the rebranding of the company as CJ Express Group Co., Ltd.[1][2]
The brand operates over 1,000 stores under CJ Express and CJ Supermarket across 44 provinces in Thailand, primarily in suburban and rural areas. With a focus on serving local communities, CJ Express has implemented a unique business model that integrates various shopping zones within each store, offering an array of products from household necessities to beauty and lifestyle goods coming from associated companies. The company also launched CJ MORE, a flagship store aimed at providing an enhanced shopping experience, following the philosophy of “More Than Supermarket.” CJ MORE emphasizes the brand’s commitment to offering a broader selection, more affordable pricing, and greater value to its customers.[2][3][4]
History
editIn 2005, CJ Express was founded by Wit Sasiluksananon (Thai: วิทย์ ศศลักษณานนท์ ) under the company PSD Rukthai Co., Ltd. The first store, located in Ratchaburi, operated as a wholesale store spanning two units. Later, the store model shifted to a hybrid convenience store and supermarket format, focusing on selling consumer products at affordable prices. CJ Express distinguished itself by offering lower prices than typical convenience stores and frequently running promotions, attracting local customers. Furthermore, the stores featured smaller, lesser-known brands not available in other convenience stores, contributing to the company's positive reception and business expansion.[1][5]
In 2013, a major turning point occurred when Sathien Setthasit, co-founder and chairman of Carabao Group, along with partners, acquired over 80% of PSD Rukthai Co., Ltd., and the company was renamed CJ Express Group Co., Ltd. At the time, CJ Express operated about 200 stores.[1][3]
Although under the same ownership as Carabao Group, CJ Express operates independently. Recognizing the intense competition in the convenience store industry, Sathien Setthasit focused on creating differentiation. In addition to competitive pricing, CJ Express introduced a model featuring multiple service zones within the store, such as NINE Beauty for beauty products and Bao Café for coffee, increasing product and service variety for customers.[3][6]
CJ Express under the leadership of Sathien Setthasit implemented a "Small Town Strategy"[7] to enhance its presence by opening branches in provincial areas, the outskirts of Bangkok, and suburban regions. This strategy focused on entering smaller, less competitive markets while tailoring products and services to meet local needs, fostering community engagement, and building brand loyalty in underserved areas. By strategically avoiding direct competition with larger chains,CJ Express established a robust local presence. Following this initial success, the company further expanded into urban markets under the brand name "CJ Supermarket." [6][8]
In 2018, CJ Express reported 11.58 billion baht in revenue and 262 million baht in profit. The next year, revenue grew to 13.8 billion baht with a profit of 358 million baht. By the following year, revenue had increased to about 17 billion baht, with profits nearing 1 billion baht. As of 2020, CJ Express had expanded to 600 branches across 29 provinces, including key areas like Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Nakhon Pathom.[1][6][8][9]
In December 2020, CJ Express launched "CJ MORE," a flagship store located in the Silom district, spanning over 1,200 square meters. The store was designed to offer a unique retail experience, with various zones such as CJ Supermarket, NINE Beauty, Bao Café, and CJ MORE Food Hall, which featured well-known restaurants and pop-up stores.[3][6][9]
In order to promote future growth and manage growing competition in the retail sector, CJ Express expects to grow to at least 1,000 branches throughout 30 provinces and plans to list the company on the Stock Exchange of Thailand by the end of 2025.[1][6]

The company’s retail operations are anchored by CJ Supermarket, which focuses on consumer goods, providing competitive prices comparable to hypermarkets while maintaining convenience with locations closer to residential areas. As of 2024, CJ Supermarket operates more than 500 branches across Thailand.[1][3][4][5]
