In Electrical Engineering, a сapacitor bank is a set of electrical devices for providing reactive power (compensating low power factor) on high-voltage electricity transmission networks.
The term 'сapacitor bank' is widely used but not technically specific. It may refer to:
- Shunt capacitor bank - banks of capacitors connected in parallel to the line or load, may be fixed or switched;
- Series capacitor bank - banks of capacitors connected in series with the line, may be fixed or switched;
- Static VAR compensators (SVC) - Complex devices containing one or both of the above, probable in multiple instances, together with optional shunt reactances, harmonic filters and other features. All or some of these parts of SVC are switched with thyristors providing automatic fast-acting stage regulation of power factor
