Cardiff University Rifle Club is a student rifle club based in Cardiff, Wales. It is one of two student rifle clubs in the Welsh Target Shooting Federation.[2]
The club was initially founded in 1964, and is commonly regarded as the second oldest student sports clubs at Cardiff University (the oldest being the Rugby Club). The club was refounded in 1990 by Cardiff Rifle Club, that donated the majority of equipment. The club principally trains as a .22 Smallbore rifle club, however does also air rifle training, and fullbore.[1]
Domestic competitions
editCardiff University Rifle Club currently competes in Welsh Target Shooting and British Universities and Colleges Sport as it's main annual competitions, achieving highly year on year.[1] Within the Welsh Varsity, the annual multidisciplinary sporting event between Cardiff University and Swansea University, CURC has won every year, except for 2022.[1] The club often podiums in both the BUCS Short Range and Long Range Championships.[1][3] The club often leads in the Welsh 25 Yards Championships, and achieved first, second and third in the University Class in 2024.[1]
University Awards
editRifle University Rifle Club has outperformed in proportion to it's size frequently over the last seven years. The club has recieved multiple nominations at the Cardiff University Athletics Union Awards Ceremony. Recent club awards have Included Sportsman and Sportwoman (won 2017/18), AU President's Award for Outstanding Achievement (2018/19), Club of the Year (2020/2021), and COVID Hero Award (as replaced AU President's Award for Outstanding Achievement for the academic year 2020/2021).[1] The club has also frequently achieved extremely successful charity drives, including raising the third most of any sports club in the academic year 2020/2021.[1][4]

editCardiff University Rifle Club has had members within the GB training squad, and some represent Great Britain at the Commonwealth Games, such as Dean Bale.[5][6]
