Cheryl B. McNeil is a professor of psychiatry, licensed psychologist, and researcher at the University of Florida College of Medicine. She researches the Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), an evidence-based treatment used to build positive relationships between caregivers and their children exhibiting behavior challenges.[1] McNeil ran the PCIT lab at West Virginia University[2] before teaching at the University of Florida.[3]

Career

edit

McNeil earned her BS at Louisiana State University and MS and PhD at University of Florida. She completed her predoctoral internship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in 1989. McNeil started the PCIT program at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center before moving to West Virginia University where she spent 28 years as a faculty member and now holds professor emeritus status.[1]

As a Parent-Child Interaction Therapy researcher, McNeil has co-authored seven books and conducted hundreds of studies on the method.[4] Her research includes studies on implementing PCIT,[5][6] and adapting PCIT to new populations, such as autism,[7]  toddlers,[8][9] child maltreatment,[10] older children (ages 7 to 10), home-based wraparound programs,[11] foster children,[12] and dentistry.[13]

She also created an adapted version of the PCIT method that is used with teachers and students called Teacher-Child Interaction Training (TCIT).[14] McNeil is a global trainer of PCIT and has implemented it in Norway, New Zealand, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Turkey, Iran, and South Korea.

McNeil has received grant funding from the National Institute of Health using PCIT and studying pediatric oral healthcare[15] and service delivery in rural Appalachia.[16]

She served on the editorial board of the International Journal for Behavioral Consultation and Therapy and is an ad hoc reviewer of several journals on child psychology and behavioral disorders.
