Draft:Choctaw Cultural Center

The Choctaw Cultural Center is located at 1919 Hina Hanta Wy, Calera, OK 74730 and aims to preserve Choctaw history and culture through an immersive experience.

The Choctaw Cultural Center features various temporary and permanent exhibits. Exhibits inform visitors about Choctaw art, origins and creation stories, life in Mississippi, the Trail of Tears, tribal government, and much more. The Okhvta Chito Okhoatali exhibit is dedicated to Choctaw and French relations. This exhibit is the result of a collaboration between the Musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac and the University of Alabama.

The Living Village features Choctaw houses, arbors, earth ovens, and much more. Visitors can learn about stickball, social dancing, farming, cooking, and traditional foods. The mound at the center of the village represents Nanih Waiya or Mother Mound which is located in present-day Mississippi, the Choctaw homeland. The prairie that surrounds the village features plants from Mississippi and Oklahoma. Historic Preservation hosts Archaeology Day at the village every October.

Daily activities provide youth and adults with a variety of learning experiences. Visitors can go on a guided tour of the cultural center, watch demonstrations, or participate in hands-on activities. Educational carts teach visitors about beadwork, basket weaving, and much more. There are also workshops for children and adults. The Luksi Activity Center encourages playful learning through puppet shows, arts and crafts, short films, and much more. Youth can play in the log cabin, summer chukka, and the treehouse which has a slide. The Hvshi Gift Store has souvenirs for visitors of all ages.

Visitors can also visit the Kowi Chito Theater to watch films and presentations about Choctaw history and culture. Cinema at the Center invites visitors to watch various films. Champuli Cafe offers visitors various food options including Choctaw foods and other American fare.

The Choctaw Cultural Center also features a collection and archives.
