Climate Finance in Liberia

edit

Liberia[1] has been vulnerable to climate change[2] impacts. This makes Climate Finance[3] very critical in implementing projects meant for adaptation measures for livelihood improvement.

The Country Climate and Development Report[4] CCDR identifies priority climate actions that respond to adaptation and migration needs in Liberia:

  1. Climate Risks and Readiness – moving towards a policy framework that integrates climate finance, risk, and coordination.
  2. Essential Infrastructure for Economic Development – upgrading and designing infrastructure built with climate risks and opportunities in mind.
  3. Human Development Promotion – moving towards targeted investment in human development to reduce dependency on natural wealth and increase climate resilience; and
  4. Sustainable Land Management – focused on sustainable land-use across sectors, emphasizing grassroot benefits from the environment which is a natural capital.

Climate Finance Importance

edit

Vulnerability to Climate Change[2]

edit
  1. Liberia is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. This threat could shrink Liberia's economy by 15% and push 1.3 million[5] people into poverty by 2050. Implementing just a few adaptation interventions could boost agricultural productivity[3] and enhance climate resilience for almost 800,000 people.

Community Empowerment and Poverty Eradication[6]

edit

2. Agriculture has been highly impacted by negative impacts of climate change. This has lowered the quality of lives of farmers and affected communities at grassroot level. Climate Finance gives a roadmap of the right priorities for Liberia to follow regarding food security and improvement of quality of life from grassroot level.

Biodiversity through Environment Conservation

edit

3. Climate Finance creates opportunities for stakeholders to conserve the environment which enriches the natural heritage of Liberia as well as promoting sustainable land use practices. Grassroot stakeholders not only have to improve on food security but also riparian land restoration for biodiversity and sustainable land use.
