Colegio de la Medalla Milagrosa, officially: Colegio de la Medalla Milagrosa, Inc. of Jagna, Bohol, is a private, Catholic, co-educational, secondary education institution run by the Congregation of the Augustinian Recollect Sisters in the Municipality of Jagna, Bohol, Philippines. It was founded in 1939 by Fr. Filomeno Lucero, the then Parish Priest of the St. Michael the Archangel Parish, Jagna, Bohol. The institution currently offers secondary education from Grade 7 - Grade 12.[1]
History
editEarly History
editIn response to the earnest request of Rev. Fr. Filomeno Lucero, Parish Priest of Jagna and Vicar Forane of the 3rd District of Bohol, Very Rev. Mo. Rosario de San Luis Gonzaga, Superior General of the Augustinian Recollect Missionaries, and Rev. Mo. Pilar de San Jose, Procurator General of the Congregation, arrived in Jagna, Bohol on August 15, 1939.[2] Their purpose was to consider the proposal for opening a Catholic school in the town. Following fruitful negotiations, the proposal was accepted.[3]
Fr. Lucero promptly initiated repairs on the house of Doña Ines Abrea, which previously served as a private high school. This temporary school building was dedicated to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal and was named "Colegio de la Medalla Milagrosa" in honor of Fr. Lucero's devotedness to the Blessed Mother under this esteemed title. The pioneers of the school opened the Kindergarten class on December 1, 1939; the following year the primary classes were added.[3]
Post-war period
editAfter World War II in 1945, regular classes resumed, including the addition of 5th and 6th-grade classes. The complete secondary course was offered in 1946, and the school received government recognition No. 382 in 1947. Collegiate courses were introduced in 1948-1949, offering Education and Liberal Arts. [3]
Challenges and Transformations
editIn the early 1970s, the Elementary and College departments were phased out for reasons not fully disclosed. However, the High School Department remained normal operations. In 1984, Typhoon Nitang caused significant damage to the main building, necessitating extensive repairs. The General Administration of the Augustinian Recollect Sisters provided assistance, leading to the school's renovation.
In November 1989, a strong earthquake hit Jagna, condemning the main building. Temporary classes were held on the school grounds until a new building was blessed and dedicated in January 1992, supported by generous contributions from parents and alumni.[4]
Recent history
editIn 2009, Colegio de la Medalla Milagrosa became a grantee of the Educational Service Contracting (ESC) Program. [5] In 2019, the new building was demolished to make way for the Talangpaz Building, named after the founders of the Augustinian Recollect Sisters.[6] The Talangpaz Building was completed in 2022, just in time for the resumption of face-to-face classes after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Campus
editThe campus of Colegio de la Medalla Milagrosa is situated in Poblacion, Jagna, Bohol, adjacent to St. Michael the Archangel Parish and in front of the Jagna Insular Plaza.[7]
Facilities within the campus include:
- Fr. Filomeno Lucero Building (Main Building): The first building upon entering the campus is the two-story Lucero Hall. It is also the oldest structure of the institution as it formerly served as the house of Doña Ines Abrea and as a convent. Currently, it houses classrooms for the Senior High School Department, Faculty Room, Audio Visual Room (AVR), Library, Computer laboratory, Guidance office, Treasurer's office, Registrar's office, Principal's office, chapel, and the Residence.
- Talangpaz Building (New Building): Completed in 2022, this building houses classrooms for the Junior High School Department and some classrooms of the Senior High School Department.
- Student Facilities Center: Situated just outside the main building, this area houses the Canteen, Speech Laboratory, Science Laboratory, and the Home Economics Building.
- Quadrangle: Located beside the right side of the main building, the Quadrangle serves as the venue for various school events and ball games.
- Mini Park: Situated adjacent to the Talangpaz Building, this grassy area hosts various school activities and features the historic Mango Tree.
- Talangpaz EcoPark: Located beside the left side of the main building, the Talangpaz EcoPark situates a garden space and a mural portraying the story of the foundation of the Augustinian Recollect Sisters.[8]
