Copenhagen Optimization is a Danish aviation technology and consultancy firm based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Founded in 2014, the company develops airport operations software for passenger flow forecasting and airport resource allocation. In 2024, the French private equity firm InfraVia Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in the company.[1][2]
History
[edit]Copenhagen Optimization was established by Kasper Hounsgaard and Anders Dohn, former managers at Copenhagen Airport. Initially operating as a specialized consultancy, the firm transitioned to developing proprietary software to automate airport logistics. The company's early development received financial support from the Innobooster program with Denmark's Innovation Fund (Innovationsfonden).[3]
The company subsequently expanded its operations internationally. In the early 2020s, the company was named a Gazelle company by the Danish business newspaper Børsen.[4]
Technology and operations
[edit]The firm’s software, Better Airport, uses predictive analytics and digital twin modeling to simulate airport operations and forecast passenger volumes at various points within a terminal, based on flight schedules and operational data.[5] The forecasts support operational decisions related to security lane openings, baggage carousel assignments, and check-in counter allocation based on projected passenger volumes.
Notable implementations of the virtual queuing technology include:
- Seattle–Tacoma International Airport: The SEA Spot Saver system, which allows passengers to reserve specific times for security screening.[6]
- Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport: A virtual checkpoint program that allows passengers to reserve specific times for security screening.[7]
- Brisbane Airport and Carrasco International Airport: The software has been adopted at both airports for security lane configuration.[8]
