What is “cut the D1”?

Let’s break down the phrase: • “To cut” means to destroy or get rid of something. • “D1” stands for Division One, typically referring to a high level or elite tier in a competitive context.

But how do these ideas work together? “Cut the D1” essentially means to stop being obsessed with or overly focused on being in Division One, to stop “glazing” (a term we’ll explain shortly).

Now, what is “glaze”? • Glaze (verb) means to overly exaggerate or look up to someone or something, often to the point of idolization.

So, when you say “cut the glaze,” you’re telling someone to stop exaggerating or putting someone on a pedestal.

“To D1 glaze” (or Division One glazing) means to idolize the highest level or status, often in an excessive or obsessive way. The term refers to someone who might idolize those in “Division One” (the highest tier or rank) to such an extreme that they lose perspective.

To “cut the D1” is then a call to stop the excessive idolization of Division One and just focus on more practical goals, letting go of the obsession with being at the top.

When was “D1” created?

The phrase “cut the D1” originated on the TDS SMP (The Duston School Survival Minecraft Playthrough), a Minecraft server where friends would come together to play the game. Minecraft is a sandbox game where players can build, explore, and create freely.

The term was coined by: • Sarwar Ali • Jackson O’Beirne • Samuel Connolly-Green

While Samuel primarily coined the phrase “cut the glaze,” Jackson popularized the term “D1 glaze,” which referred to idolizing Division One status. Sarwar combined both ideas to create the now popular phrase: “cut the D1.”

And from that “Cut the d1” was formed a new urban slang term.
