The Indiana Tech Cyber Warriors are the collegiate cybersecurity competition team of Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Founded in 2006, the team competes in cyber defense, penetration testing, capture-the-flag, and related information security competitions.[1][2]
The team is best known for its long-running success in the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC) system. Indiana Tech states that the Cyber Warriors have won the Indiana state CCDC title 18 times overall and 11 consecutive times from 2015 through 2025, and have also won the Midwest regional championship five times.[3][4][5]
In 2025, the Cyber Warriors recorded the program's best result at the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition by finishing sixth nationally.[6]
History
[edit]Indiana Tech identifies 2006 as the founding year of the Cyber Warriors program.[7] The team developed as part of the university's broader cybersecurity program and later became one of the institution's most visible competitive and recruitment-focused academic activities.[8]
By 2022, Indiana Tech magazine described the program as having won 15 Indiana Collegiate Cyber Defense Competitions, including eight straight, and three regional titles, while also noting that coach Matt Hansen had led the team since 2015.[9] The university's later materials credited the program with continued expansion in both defensive and offensive cybersecurity competitions.[10]
Indiana Tech faculty pages have identified Matt Hansen as Cyber Warriors Coach, Zhaojun "David" Li as a coach for the team, and Changhao Chenli as a co-coach, reflecting the program's faculty-supported structure across multiple university pages.[11][12][13]
Competition record
[edit]Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition
[edit]The Cyber Warriors compete primarily in the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition system, a U.S. collegiate competition in which student teams defend enterprise-style networks under live operational pressure.[14]
Indiana Tech states that its team has won the Indiana state CCDC 18 times overall, including 11 consecutive championships as of 2025.[15][16] University materials also state that the program has won the Midwest regional title five times.[17][18]
The official NCCDC past finalists page lists Indiana Tech as a national finalist in 2007, 2011, 2018, 2024, and 2025.[19] Indiana Tech's own summaries identify 2024 as a 10th-place national finish and 2025 as a sixth-place finish, the latter described by the university as the program's best national result to date.[20][21]
Collegiate Penetration Testing Competition
[edit]The team also competes in the Collegiate Penetration Testing Competition (CPTC), which focuses on offensive security and professional-style penetration testing workflows.[22]
In 2022, Indiana Tech earned a berth in the CPTC Global Finals after a second-place finish at the Great Lakes regional event.[23] In 2023, the Cyber Warriors won the Great Lakes regional CPTC, which Indiana Tech described as the program's first regional CPTC title, and advanced to the 2024 global finals.[24][25][26]
Other competitions
[edit]Indiana Tech's cybersecurity program states that the Cyber Warriors also compete in capture-the-flag events and other national cybersecurity competitions, including CyberForce Competition and events described by the university as top-tier competitions held in cities such as Chicago, Seattle, Orlando, Las Vegas, and San Antonio.[27][28]
Program and academic role
[edit]The Cyber Warriors are closely tied to Indiana Tech's cybersecurity academic offerings and CAE-CD-designated cybersecurity program.[29] In January 2023, Indiana Tech was designated a National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense for its Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity program, valid through academic year 2028.[30][31]
Indiana Tech has also linked participation in the Cyber Warriors to recruitment and scholarship efforts. The university advertises a Cyber Warriors scholarship opportunity for qualifying new students who enroll and participate in the program.[32]
University materials further state that all full-time members from the previous decade obtained jobs after graduation, and cite alumni employment at companies including Cisco, Microsoft, Apple, Raytheon, BAE Systems, Walmart, Deloitte, Secureworks, and Rapid7.[33]
Recognition
[edit]Indiana Tech has repeatedly described the Cyber Warriors as one of the university's flagship academic competition programs and a major part of its reputation in cybersecurity education.[34]
In 2022, coach Matt Hansen was appointed as an advisory member to Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb's Executive Council on Cybersecurity, with Indiana Tech's announcement specifically identifying him as coach of the Cyber Warriors.[35]
