David Russell is an American chemist who focuses on bioanalytical and biophysical chemistry. He is currently employed by Department of Chemistry at Texas A&M University in College Station as a professor and researcher. His group focuses on the development of next-generation native ion mobility and mass spectrometry.[1]
Education
editDavid Russell completed his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of Arkansas in 1974. In 1978, he got his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.[2]
Career
editDavid Russell worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for two years.[3] Since then, he has been employed in the Department of Chemistry at Texas A&M University as a professor since 2006. He is leading research groups that study bioanalytical and biophysical chemistry. They have developed a novel variable-temperature nano-electrospray ionization (vT-ESI) ion mobility-mass spectrometer. This instrument allows studies of both cold- and heat-induced chemical processes, detection of different conformers of proteins, and determination of the thermochemistry for a model membrane protein system binding lipids.[4]
The Russell research group uses various analytical techniques to characterize their data, such as mass spectrometry and ion mobility spectrometry. Many of the instruments in this lab have been developed or modified to aid their research. This helps their research on different ions and lipids and how they affect the structures of proteins.[3] Some examples include Hybrid Ion Mobility Mass Spec, Ion Mobility - TOF, and LC-Q.[5] These instruments assist with observing biological molecules in their gas phases.
Russell has been an editor of many scientific journals, including Journal of Cluster Science, Journal of Mass Spectrometry, the International Journal of Mass Spectrometry, and Journal of the American Society of Mass Spectrometry.[6]
