Early Life
editDavid Hawker was born in Ireland and raised in the Midlands region of the United Kingdom. At the age of four, he sailed on a ferry from the River Mersey to Dublin, an experience he says inspired him to seek a maritime career..[1]
Career

editHawker began his career as a merchant seaman as a deck apprentice in 1963. He left the Merchant Navy in 1982 having risen to the rank of Captain[2].His seafaring experience includes the role of navigator for a sailing ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean[3]. He was also a member of the Royal Naval Reserves for two years[4].
Artist
editCaptain David Hawker is a critically acclaimed painter specialising in maritime art.
Hawker worked as a commercial artist in the 1980s selling his work as mass-produced prints to be stocked in the gift shops of UK tourist attractions including Canterbury Cathedral.[4]
In 1983 he was commissioned to paint 63 Royal Navy vessels. Fifteen-thousand prints of these works were available for crews to purchase in the onboard NAAFI shops[4]. In 1987 Hawker revealed he had been commissioned to create artwork for the Queen Elizabeth 2 luxury liner[5]. He also designed artwork for the royal dining room of HMY Britannia[4].
Hawker’s experience and expertise in maritime painting led to him being appointed as the official artist for the Mersey River Festival[1] in 1999, a post he held until the annual festival was cancelled in 2020.
Actor
editAfter leaving the Merchant Navy, Hawker embarked on a new career in film and television, initially as a background actor.
Hawker is now a character actor who is credited on several movies including The Infidel[6]. He has also worked as an uncredited supporting artist on Hollywood blockbusters including Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets[7]
Personal Life
editCaptain David Hawker lives in Rushden. As of November 2024, he is President of the Royal British Legion Rushden Branch[8].
He has also sold his artwork to raise funds for The Seafarers’ Charity.[4]
