David McMakin is an American football safety. He was born on June 20, 1952 in Tucker Georgia. He played for the Alabama Crimson Tide of the SEC, under coach Bear Bryant from 1971-1973. He was All-SEC and an Alabama letterman. He won the 1973 National Championship and the 1971 Jerry Duncan I Like to Practice Spring Award. He comes from a sports-oriented family. His brother, John McMakin, was a tight end for the Pittsburgh Steelers (1972-1974), the Detroit Lions (1975), and the Seattle Seahawks (1976). His brother-in-law, Ken Head, owner of Head Financial Group, was a center for the Furman Paladins, and his grandfather, John Weaver McMakin, was a pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1902. He returned a blocked punt by Mike Rains for a touchdown during a game against Mississippi State in 1972. He had 1 touchdown, and had 1 interception for 5 yards. He decided not to go into the NFL.
