Densil Porteous/Densil R. Porteous (born in 1980 or 1981 in Jamaica) is an American LGBTQ+ activist,.[1] nonprofit leader, and entrepreneur. He is the CEO of Pride Fund 1, a venture fund focused on supporting diverse entrepreneurs within the LGBTQ+ community, and the Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus, an LGBTQ+ community center in Columbus, Ohio.[2] Porteous has held significant roles in higher education administration, strategic marketing, and leadership across various nonprofit and tech organizations.
Early Life and Education
editPorteous was born in Jamaica, West Indies and spent his early years in Brooklyn, New York and Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Kenyon College in 2002. He has an MBA from the University of Phoenix.
Career
editPorteous worked at Kenyon College for four years, serving as the Director of Multicultural Student Recruitment, where he developed strategies to enhance diversity and inclusion within the student body. He has worked at the Columbus College of Art & Design, Stanford University and the Ohio State University's Wexner Center for the Arts[3].
Since 2020 he has served as the CEO of Pride Fund 1 and the Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus.[4]
LGBTQ+ Advocacy
editDensil Porteous has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights for over two decades. He has held leadership roles on the boards of several prominent LGBTQ+ focused nonprofits, including Human Rights Campaign, Advocates for Youth, Equitas Health, and The Legacy Fund of the Columbus Foundation.[5] His advocacy has focused on intersectionality, emphasizing the need for equity and justice within both the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.[6]
In 2021 he was recognized as a Champion of Pride from the Midwest by The_Advocate_(magazine)[7] and was featured in Season 2, Episode 2 of Your Attention Please, a series on Hulu that highlights Black excellence. The episode showcased Porteous’s origin story, leadership style and his efforts to support the LGBTQ+ community.
Personal Life
editPorteous is an accomplished public speaker, regularly addressing audiences at major events and conferences such as SXSW[8],the Milken Institute Global Conference[9] and the Eradicate Hate Global Summit[10]
His speeches often reflect on themes of identity, resilience, and intersectionality, drawing on his personal experiences as a Black, gay, and Jewish individual.
He is also a writer, sharing reflections and social commentary on his blog, Think Higher Feel Deeper: Destination Unknown.
Porteous is openly queer.
