Jonah Elias Rindner, known professionally as Dolo Tonight (and sometimes mononymously as DOLO), is an American singer, rapper, and multi-instrumentalist. Born on December 13, 1997, in Watchung, New Jersey, Dolo has carved out a distinctive niche in the indie rock scene, blending elements of alternative rock, pop, and hip hop into what he describes as "anti-pop."[1] His music often features introspective lyrics that explore themes of isolation, relationships, and personal growth.[2]
Early life
editJonah Elias Rindner was exposed to various forms of art and creativity from a young age. At the age of five, he was gifted a pair of drumsticks by his babysitter, sparking his lifelong passion for music. This early introduction led his family to purchase his first drum kit, allowing him to explore his rhythmic inclinations. During his time at Valley View Middle School, he became actively involved in the jazz ensemble band, which further developed his musical talent.
Career
editDolo Tonight began his music career in the indie music scene, initially performing locally and sharing his music on streaming platforms. His first commercial release, Zoom, showcases his distinct writing style, characterized by its introspective lyricism and a fluid approach to storytelling.[3] This track gained traction and led to his signing with Asylum Records.[4][5][6] In 2021, he released the EP Back to Earth under Asylum Records, blending ambient and hip-hop elements in a way that resonated with fans and critics alike.[7] This project firmly established him as an artist unafraid to take risks and explore new sonic territories.
In 2022, Dolo shifted his focus to indie rock and signed with Epitaph Records. Reflecting on the transition, he remarked that signing with the label responsible for the punk anthems of his youth felt surreal.[8] Under Epitaph, he released the critically acclaimed EP Life's A Party Then You're Dead, featuring tracks like "Hotels" and "Car Ride," which delve into themes of isolation and relationships.[9]
Musical style and artistry
editDolo Tonight's music is an eclectic mix of alternative rock, indie rock, and pop, which he describes as "anti-pop."[10] This genre embraces the foundational elements of popular music but subverts them in unconventional ways, resulting in a distinctive sound that sets him apart. His inspirations include Two Door Cinema Club, MGMT, Passion Pit, and Cage the Elephant.[11]
