Yasin El Ashrafi (born February 2, 1980, in Leicester, Leicestershire) is a British entrepreneur, music mentor, and founder of HQ Recording, HQ Can, and HQ Familia. Known for his contributions to the music industry and community work, El Ashrafi has mentored numerous young musicians and aspiring creatives. His efforts in supporting self-employment and personal development through music have earned him several awards, including the Prince's Trust Mentor of the Year award in 2018[1] and recognition in The Times Alternative Rich List.[2]
Early Life
editYasin El Ashrafi was born in Leicester and grew up in the St. Andrews estate before moving to New Parks at the age of eight. Raised by his mother alongside five younger sisters, El Ashrafi left school at 15 without qualifications after being expelled.[3] His early interest in music led him to Soft Touch Studios in Leicester, where he was introduced to DJing and music production.[3] Despite struggles with addiction in his early life, which he overcame in 2006, El Ashrafi credits the birth of his son as the turning point that inspired him to pursue a career in the music industry.[4]
Career
editIn 2009, Yasin El Ashrafi founded the Leicester Community Music Project (LCMP), aimed at providing opportunities for young adults to engage with music. Inspired by his experiences at Soft Touch, LCMP focused on offering workshops and outreach programs for people over 18, funded by the National Lottery and Leicester City Council.[5]
In 2010, he established HQ Recording, a music studio in Leicester.[6] The studio, housed in a former music venue, became a creative hub for urban music genres including rap, grime, and hip-hop. In 2017, El Ashrafi expanded his ventures by creating HQ Familia, a record label aimed at promoting local talent from Leicester and the Midlands. The label's roster includes artists such as StudioWyzz, Harri Georgio, and Maniscooler, many of whom have been featured on BBC Radio 1Xtra.[7]
Community Work
editEl Ashrafi is also known for his community engagement through HQ Can, a Community Interest Company (CIC), which focuses on providing free studio time, mentoring, and creative opportunities to marginalized and unemployed young people. HQ Can's initiatives have helped numerous individuals gain confidence and skills in music production, DJing, singing, and radio broadcasting. The organization has also been involved in projects funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and local councils, including the Talent Match program, which supported over 80 young people in starting creative careers.[8]
Awards and Recognition
editIn 2018, Yasin El Ashrafi was featured on The Times Alternative Rich List.[2] He also received the Prince's Trust Mentor of the Year award in recognition of his work in mentoring young people and helping them start their own businesses.[1] In 2020, he was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to music and mentoring.[9]
Personal Life
editYasin El Ashrafi lives in Kibworth, Leicestershire, with his partner Sallyanne Kirk and their son Lion. He also has two children from a previous relationship, Kai, aged 18, and Ava, aged 12. El Ashrafi often credits his family as a source of motivation in both his personal and professional life.[6]
