The Dutch M53 helmet (Dutch: M53 Troepenhelm) is a combat helmet that was used by the Dutch military from 1953 to the mid 1996 when it was succeeded by the M95 helmet. The M53 replaced and standardized the variety of helmets used by the Netherlands before and after the Second World War. Modeled after the American M1, the helmet consists of two pieces, an outer metal shell and an inner liner made of laminate (pre-1970) or plastic (post-1970) . Eight manufacturers supplied the inner liners and four manufacturers supplied the shells.
History
editWhen introduced, the M53 helmet replaced the domestic M40 and M41 helmets as well as the internationally supplied Mk I/Mk I*, Mk II, Mk III, and M1 helmets.
By 1990, the use of the M53, by the Dutch military, in conflict diminished, favoring more modern helmets
