Dynatest A/S is a Danish technology company that develops, manufactures, and services specialized equipment and software for evaluating the structural capacity and surface condition of roads, highways, and airport pavements. Headquartered in Ballerup, Denmark, the company operates an American subsidiary in Gainesville, Florida. Since 2019, Dynatest has operated as an independent subsidiary of the Danish engineering and technology conglomerate Eltronic Group.[1].
History
Founding and early developments (1976–1980s)
Dynatest was founded in 1976 by three engineers associated with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The founding was based on research and development in non-destructive pavement testing and structural evaluation techniques.
In 1977, the company developed a Light Weight Deflectometer (LWD), a portable device used for testing the load-bearing capacity and stiffness of soils, subgrades, and pavement foundation layers.
Dynatest established its first presence in the United States in 1978, and in 1980, the company brought its first commercial Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) to market. FWD technology simulates the dynamic impact of a heavy vehicle wheel load and measures pavement deflections resulting from a dynamic load pulse, allowing engineers to assess structural pavement capacity without damaging the road surface[2].
International expansion and acquisitions (1990s–2010s)
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Dynatest expanded its global operations. In 1987, the company introduced the Heavy Weight Deflectometer (HWD), designed for testing pavement structures subjected to higher load capacities, particularly airport runways. In 1999, Dynatest entered the pavement profiling market with the introduction of the Road Surface Profiler (RSP).
In 2002, Dynatest acquired the profiling and friction equipment divisions of US-based K.J. Law Engineers, including related technologies and patents. The company further expanded its operational footprint into Latin America and the Caribbean in 2012.
Ownership changes
In June 2014, the Danish private equity firm SE Blue Equity acquired a majority stake in Dynatest[3]
In 2019, Dynatest was acquired by Hedensted-based Eltronic Group. Following the acquisition, Dynatest continued to operate as an independent subsidiary within the group.
Products and technology
Dynatest develops hardware systems and software analytical tools for structural and functional pavement evaluation. The equipment is used by road authorities, consulting engineers, contractors, and airport operators worldwide.
- Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD): Trailer-mounted or vehicle-integrated testing systems that apply a dynamic impact load onto a pavement surface to measure impulse deflections.
