Edel Abu Baker Issa was a Libyan Tuareg revolutionary commander from Ghat, Libya. He led Tuareg revolutionary forces in southwestern Libya during and after the First Libyan Civil War.[1][2]
Biography
[edit]Issa was a member of Libya's Tuareg community from Ghat.[2] During the 2011 Libyan revolution, he became one of the principal commanders of Tuareg revolutionary forces opposing the government of Muammar Gaddafi. Former members of Gaddafi's armed forces who defected to the revolution later served under his command.[1]
Following the overthrow of Gaddafi, Issa remained an influential Tuareg military leader in the Fezzan region. He stated that Tuareg, Tebu and Arab armed groups had previously cooperated in joint operations against drug smugglers before relations between the communities deteriorated.[2]
In March 2015, during the Ubari conflict, Issa was killed in a Tebu ambush near Ubari.[2]
