Edmond and Lucy is a French animated television series in 52 11-minute episodes, produced by the independent French animation studio MIAM! animation , adapted from the work of Marc Boutavant and Astrid Desbordes Edmond et ses Amis published by Editions Nathan (editions) , translated into 15 languages and marketed in 20 countries. The series is directed by François Narboux .

Its ambition is to reconnect children with nature, to awaken them to the richness and diversity of fauna and flora in all seasons.

It is the first animated series in line with its subject, produced in an eco-responsible approach. The use of Unity ( real-time 3D rendering software ), thanks to the work of Artefacts Studio , made it possible to achieve a richness of atmospheres, textures and vegetation in line with the desired artistic project. But also to eliminate almost entirely one of the stages that traditionally consumes time and energy: the calculation of 3D images (rendering). This choice has a double virtue for the viewer: the richness and quality of the rendering on the one hand and the reasoned use of resources on the other.

Concept

edit

Edmund the squirrel and Lucy the bear are raised as brother and sister in a majestic chestnut tree , a sort of radiant city in the forest. Play and grow in the heart of nature, answer the riddles that it raises and experience outdoor adventures in the company of their family and friends: Edouard, Edmond's dad, Mima the grandmother, Georges Hibou, the mice Polka and Hortense, Mitzi the little bat and the Thing... The good life!

Edmond and Lucy is an eco-responsible series in the contemporary sense of the term: it aims to reconnect children and their families to the living world, to learn to observe it for inspiration, to show how to be interested, play, observe , marvel, question, touch, feel, make, manipulate, live with.

It is in contact with nature that Edmond, Lucy and their gang will experience adventures rich in learning, experiences and knowledge which will allow them to improve as individuals and as members of a group. community.

The series approaches nature from different angles thanks to several types of episodes:

- Bushcraft episodes / making and building in nature to spark children's creativity linked to nature: landart, cooking, DIY, creative recycling, making musical instruments with elements found in the forest, etc.

- Adventure and discovery episodes, to encourage self-confidence, surpassing oneself and encourage children to take their turn on an adventure in the forest

- Emotional episodes: to learn to listen to nature, to oneself and therefore to others

- Biomimicry episodes: learning and being inspired by nature, the stories it gives rise to, the sobriety it imposes

Each episode addresses major themes of nature, defined in advance with naturalist experts: bees and pollination, trees and their communication network, birds, the vegetable garden, water, biomimicry and the adaptation of species living things, seeds and the cycles of nature, soils and the balance of biodiversity, land art, creative recycling, seasonal cuisine, predation. Technical

Highly noted at various festivals and professional events, Edmond and Lucy is a world first: it is the first animated series of 52 11-minute episodes, broadcast on a linear channel, mainly produced in real-time 3D . A technological choice which corresponds to an artistic and eco-responsible approach, consistent with the purpose of the series. Artistic ambition

To achieve the artistic ambition set, namely to adapt the universe of Marc Boutavant for the first time in 3D and to bring to life the forest, available in four seasons, subject to meteorological variations, teeming with insects and vegetation, a development technological was initiated with the use of a real-time 3D rendering engine . Eco-responsible ambition

The use of real time made it possible to reduce one of the major stages in the manufacturing of a 3D series, namely the image calculation time. Episodes are calculated on a single machine, in a few hours, instead of being calculated on several computers over weeks as is the case in pre-computed 3D. Real time therefore makes it possible to considerably reduce the carbon expenditure of a production.

Characters

edit

Edmond (the squirrel)

edit

Edmond is a sensitive, empathetic and altruistic hero. Clever and creative, he is the ideal partner for going on an adventure! Edmond also likes chatting with his grandmother Mima, making pompoms, cooking good recipes and collecting a whole bunch of objects gleaned from the forest. Unlike his sister, he can be quite meticulous and orderly... quite a challenge for these two since they share the same room!

Lucy (the bear)

edit

For her part, is an intrepid, dynamic and curious little bear. She likes to make noise and we allow her to! Inventive and joyful, she is a real driving force in adventures. His teasing humor sometimes annoys Edmond... but they love each other deeply and can't live without each other for very long.

Polka and Hortense (the mice)

edit

Polka and Hortense are the oldest of the group of children. One is white (Polka), the other gray (Hortense). Inseparable, the twins have a scientific approach to nature which is very useful in helping the gang move forward in their adventures. Their “know-it-all” side is sometimes a little annoying but often leads to very funny bickering.

Mitzi (the little bat)

edit

Mitzi is a little bat of about 4 years old and like many children her age, she loves imitating older children and is always delighted to follow them on their adventures. Ingenuous and direct, she says out loud what others are thinking… which can sometimes complicate situations. But these little blunders ultimately always bring a lot of poetry and comedy.

The Thing (the pink ball)

edit

The Thing is a big, very soft, pink ball of fur, perfect for cuddling. Expressing herself only in cheerful “Aputch”, she just likes to have fun in all situations. No one knows who she is or where she comes from and that's okay! In addition to being a funny and endearing character, The Thing shows that our small community accepts everyone's quirks.

Edouard (Lucy's dad)

edit

Edouard is a loving and attentive daddy bear. He is a driving force of the group. He “runs” after the chestnut trees, he cooks and feeds everyone. And finally he keeps the whole gang warm with logs on the fire and his bursts of laughter!

George (the owl)

edit

George is an adult full of fantasy and creativity, he is different and completely embraces it! He loves dressing up which is a lot of fun for the children. Adapted from DIY, he offers them great activities with objects he has gleaned from nature. Above all, it pushes Edmond, Lucy and their friends to take an artistic look at the surrounding nature and to marvel at it.

Mima (Edmond's grandmother)

edit

Mima is Edmond's grandmother, she is the oldest in the community, and undoubtedly the wisest, which gives her a natural and benevolent authority. Mima is not an old-fashioned grandmother: she is dynamic, sporty and knows how to show humor and fantasy. Mima has a great knowledge of her forest and knows a thousand legends and stories about nature. Edmond and Lucy love coming to listen to his stories which stimulate their imagination!
