The Erewash Musical Society (EMS) is an amateur theatre group based in Long Eaton, Derbyshire[1]. For several decades, EMS has been dedicated to staging musical theatre productions and fostering a passion for the performing arts within the local community..[2][3]. The society welcomes individuals of all experience levels, from aspiring actors and seasoned performers to those interested in backstage roles or supporting local theatre. EMS aims to provide a welcoming environment for anyone interested in participating in or enjoying live musical theatre.

The Cooperative Senior Choir

edit

The Erewash Musical Society (EMS) was established in 1895 under the name The Cooperative Senior Choir[4]. Initially focused on choral concerts and competition performances, the society transitioned to musical theatre in 1930 with its first production, Merrie England by Gilbert and Sullivan[5]. For many years, the society maintained a tradition of annual Gilbert and Sullivan productions, interspersed with choral concerts during the Second World War to boost morale[6].

Edacra Musical Society

edit

In 1964, the society adopted the name Edacra Musical Society[7] and expanded its repertoire to include classic musicals such as Oklahoma! and Carousel. Productions increased to twice a year, reflecting growing interest and participation.

The COVID-19 Lockdown

edit

The society adopted its current name, Erewash Musical Society, in 1978[8]. It continued its tradition of biannual productions until 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns led to the cancellation of live performances. The last production before the closure of the Duchess Theatre was Godspell[9]

Following the lifting of restrictions, EMS returned to the stage with the “Quarantined Edition” of The Addams Family: The Musical[10]. Rehearsals for this production were conducted remotely and in compliance with social distancing measures, showcasing the society’s adaptability during challenging circumstances. EMS has since resumed its regular schedule of biannual performances[11]

Erewash Musical Society Youth Group

edit

In 2009, the society launched the Erewash Musical Society Youth Group (EMUS)[12][13], which provides opportunities for younger performers. EMUS also stages two productions each year, bringing the total number of annual performances to four.
