Esports Wales is the national governing body for esports in Wales, aimed at promoting the growth and development of the esports industry across the country. Established in 2018 with the mission of supporting local esports talent, fostering community engagement, and creating opportunities for individuals to enter the creative and digital industries, Esports Wales plays a key role in shaping the future of competitive gaming in Wales.

History

Esports Wales was founded by John Jackson in response to the growing interest in esports across Wales and the need for a formal body to represent the country in national and international competitions. The organisation has grown significantly since its inception, with initiatives that focus on talent development, community outreach, and educational opportunities.

One of the key milestones in its early history was the creation of the Welsh Esports League, a national tournament designed to develop local talent and provide a competitive platform for gamers across Wales. Esports Wales has also played an active role in supporting grassroots activities, including community gaming nights and workshops aimed at helping young people explore careers in esports and related digital industries.

Esports Wales joined International Esports Federation and European Esports Federation in 2021.

In 2023, Esports Wales became full members of the European Esports Federation (EEF), which expanded its reach and influence in the broader European esports landscape.

Objectives and Activities

Esports Wales operates with several key objectives:

Talent Development: The organisation works to nurture and develop Welsh esports players, offering training and competitive opportunities through platforms such as the Welsh Esports League and the Esports Wales Academy.
Community Engagement: Esports Wales hosts a variety of community events, including Esports Wales Locals, aimed at fostering local esports communities across Wales.

FIFAe National Team Selection: Esports Wales, in partnership with the FAW, oversees the selection of the Welsh FIFAe team,
Community Nights and Local Events: Regular events that bring together gamers from different regions of Wales to participate in friendly competitions, socialise, and build a sense of community.

Esports Wales is governed by a board of directors and a dedicated team responsible for overseeing the organisation’s activities and long-term strategy. The organisation works closely with national bodies, such as the Welsh Government, and international esports organisations, like the European Esports Federation and International Esports Federation.

Future Goals

Esports Wales aims to continue its efforts to make Wales a hub for esports talent and innovation. Key future goals include expanding the reach of the Esports Wales Academy, creating more pathways into the digital industries, and further integrating esports into traditional sports through collaborations like the one with FAW. Additionally, Esports Wales seeks to strengthen its international presence by fostering partnerships with other national esports bodies and expanding its influence in European esports.
