The FC Barcelona-Paris Saint-Germain F.C. rivalry is an international club rivalry between FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. It is most often played in the Champions League, where they have faced each other a total of 14 times[1].
History
editThe clubs first played each other in the quarter finals of the 1994-95 UEFA Champions League season. The first leg resulted in a 1-1 tie, whereas the second leg saw PSG win 2-1 with a late winner from Vincent Guérin[1].
On the 8th of March, 2017, in the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League, FC Barcelona won 6-1 against PSG on aggregate at the Camp Nou, overcoming a 4 goal deficit in the second leg.[1] This makes it the largest comeback in UEFA Champions League history, many dubbing it la Remontada (English: the comeback)[2]. Tensions between the clubs escalated as a result, which worsened on February 16, 2021, when PSG defeated FC Barcelona 4-1 in the Champions League Round of 16.
In the 2021 summer transfer window, club legend Lionel Messi announced his departure from Barcelona due to the club's financial and structural difficulties[3]. He later announced his signature for PSG, arriving in Paris with big expectations. A section of PSG fans, known as the SG Ultras, were unhappy with his performances, notably hurling abuse at the player. Following this game, Messi was suspended for two weeks after an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia.[4]
