Gene Schenck is a retired president of the York Fair/York Expo Center. He was the former WGAL reporter from 1970 to 1987, where he covered big events and was known for covering the 1987 public suicide of State Treasurer R. Budd Dwyer. Schenck was also a former US Army Ranger veteran.[1][2]
Schenck went to York College of Pennsylvania and then joined the US Army special forces before moving over to WGAL in 1970. He covered the rising rates of juvenile crimes, the 1972 United States presidential election with Dick Hoxworth and Bill Saylor reporting on election nights for the first time in Lancaster County.[3]
After covering the public tragedy of Budd Dwyer in 1987 (In which Schenck was heard yelling to him to not do it as Dwyer held a gun to himself before he did it), he shared his thoughts that evening on WGAL the shocking story that made the headlines and he was one of the few reporters questioning their roles as reporters after what they had witnessed.[4] He decided to leave the Lancaster-based station after 16 years with WGAL and joined Bob Casey Jr.'s Administration.[5]
He returned to WGAL to celebrate the station's 60th anniversary.[6]
He then went to work at the York Fair/York Expo Center as vice president and was then promoted to president holding that role until he retired in 2015.[7]
