George Nounesis
editGeorge Nounesis (/ˈʝor.ɣos ˈnu.ne.sis/; Greek: Γιώργος Νούνεσης) is a Greek physicist and researcher[1], currently Director and Chairman of the Board at the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” and known for his contributions to the fields of liquid crystals physics, biomolecular physics and materials science[2]. During his tenure as president of Demokritos (2017- today), he has implemented reforms that have significantly increased technology transfer to startups, resulting in successful spin-offs and collaborations with multinationals.[3] His leadership is defined by his vision to transform Greece’s brain drain into brain gain, by creating opportunities for Greek scientists abroad to return and contribute their world-class research to the country[4].
Early life and family
editNounesis was born and raised in Corfu, Greece. He is married to Urania Dafni, who is currently a Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Athens, Greece, Director of Frontier Science Foundation-Hellas (FSF-H) and Group Statistician for the European Thoracic Oncology Platform (ETOP). Urania Dafni gained her Doctor of Science degree in 1993 in Biostatistics at the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, USA. He has two children.
Research and career
editNounesis studied Physics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (BS). He received his PhD in experimental condensed matter physics at the School of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Minnesota.[5]. His research is mainly focused on structural and thermodynamic studies of nano-structured soft materials as well as biomolecules, primarily proteins.
After his PhD, Nounesis completed a three-year Postdoctoral training at the MIT Chemistry Department, followed by the Executive Education Program on “Innovation for Economic Development” at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Before returning to Greece he held Research Staff appointments at the MIT Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory. As an Invited Professor, he has spent sabbatical leaves at the Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal at CNRS and the Chemistry Department of the University of Bordeaux I.
George Nounesis is the Director of the Biomolecular Physics Laboratory at Demokritos[6].
Since 2017 he serves as the Director & Chairman of the Board of the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”. His first term ended in 2021 and he was re-elected for a second term from 2021 to 2025. During his tenure, he has spearheaded the Expansion of the NCSRD Infrastructure Project[7], a €48 million construction initiative co-financed by the European Investment Bank and the Greek government. He also played a key role in securing nearly €8 million in seed funding to establish the Institute of Quantum Research and Quantum Technology at Demokritos[8][9].
Under his leadership, “Lefkippos”, the technology park at Demokritos evolved into a dynamic organization supporting and accelerating innovative deep-tech entrepreneurship[10][11]. He pioneered the Stavros Niarchos Industrial Fellowship Program and founded AHEDD, (the Attica Hub for the Economy of Data and Devices), which coordinates initiatives like “Smart Attica”, one of Greece's European Digital Innovation Hubs. Since 2020, he has been a member of the board of the Hellenic Space Center[12], contributing his expertise to national space initiatives. In 2022 he was elected as a member of the NATO Secretary General’s Advisory Group on emerging and disruptive technologies. He also serves as an expert reviewer of several national and international research funding organizations in the European Commission, the USA (NSF), Poland, Turkey, Belgium and Greece.
In 2023, Nounesis signed the funding agreement for translational research on sustainable materials technologies in collaboration with the MIT Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA) and Demokritos, with a budget of €6,433,999.16 from Greece 2.0 National Recovery and Resilience Plan Fund resources[13][14]. The agreement led to the establishment of “Superlabs: The Autonomous Science Laboratory” at Demokritos, which serves as an innovation hub for the deployment of disruptive devices and material inventions powered by design, fabrication and machine intelligence tools and facilitating applied research by young Greek researchers using advanced equipment not previously available in the country[15]. The same year, Nounesis successfully guided Demokritos to participate in the NATO DIANA (Defense Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic) network, a series of business accelerators across Europe and North America that support high-tech startups focused on dual-use technologies in both defense and civilian sectors. He also secured Demokritos’ selection by the NATO Innovation Fund to host one of nine entrepreneurial accelerators, which will support high-tech startups from NATO member countries. These accelerators will focus on research and development in areas such as quantum computing, autonomous systems, space, and biotechnology, offering access to state-of-the-art laboratories and investor networks.
Currently, George Nounesis is supporting the creation of the first smart building for Artificial Intelligence and Telecommunications at Demokritos[16].
In recent years, George Nounesis has expanded his focus to include the ethical and socio-political implications of artificial intelligence (AI)[17]. He has participated in multiple conferences and discussions on AI ethics, contributing to debates on the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies[18]. Nounesis also actively supports initiatives at Demokritos that promote interdisciplinary collaboration between technologists, ethicists, and policymakers, emphasizing the need for ethical frameworks that guide technological innovation in ways that serve societal well-being[19].

editFor his work, George Nounesis has received awards and distinctions from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, the Empirikion Foundation, the United States Department of the Navy and the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota.
