George Wicks Bailey (March 8, 1856[1][2] – 1909) was an associate justice of the Colorado Supreme Court from 1905[1] to 1909.
Born in St. Louis,[1] he was educated in Illinois and read law to gain admission to the bar. He was city attorney for Fort Collins, Colorado for 8 years.[1] Republican.[2] Married Belle Jarbeau.[2]
The subject of this sketch was born in St Louis Missouri. In 1873, with his parents and brothers he removed to Fort Collins Colorado. In 1881 he in company with John Smart purchased the Loveland Reporter a newspaper still published in Loveland. He and Smart sold this paper in 1882 and established The Grand Lake Prospector at Grand Lake Grand County in this State. This paper he sold to his partner in 1884. In 1885 while residing in Grand County he was admitted to the bar of this State shortly afterwards returning to Fort Collins Notwithstanding the fact'that at that time Northern Colorado had one of the -strongest bars in the State Mr Bailey by his indefatigable energy and the thorough knowledge of the fundemental principles of law which he had aquired under the direction of Charles F Caswell the late Justice of the Supreme Court and under whose tutorship he was admitted to the bar he was soon recognized as one of the able lawyers of this section For eight years he was the city attorney for five years he was deputy district attorney and he served as counsel for the Board of County Commissioners for several years He also acted as the attorney of the Water Supply and Storage Company from the time of its organization until his appointment as associate justice of the Supreme Court and was the attorney of several of the other more important irrigation companies of Northern Colorado While engaged -in-the— general practice h time was more fully occupied in the trial of criminal cases irrigation matters and municipal controversies than other branches of the law. In 1905, with the consolidation of the court of appeals and the Supreme Court, Mr. Bailey was appointed a member of the court taking his office in April of that year.[3]
