Gerald J. Cardinale, also known as Gerry Cardinale, (born May 8th, 1967) is an American businessman, private equity investor and philanthropist. Cardinale is the Founder, Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of RedBird Capital Partners LLC ("RedBird"). Founded in 2014, RedBird Capital Partners is a private investment firm that builds high-growth companies and provides strategic capital solutions to founders and entrepreneurs in three core industry verticals – Sports, Media & Entertainment, and Financial Services.

Early life and education

Cardinale was born in Villanova, Pennsylvania. Growing up, he was an avid rower and continued his rowing career throughout his higher education.[1]

Cardinale studied at Harvard University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with an Honors B.A. in Social Studies. Following his graduation, Cardinale continued his education at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, where he received a M.Phil in Politics and Political Theory and rowed on Oxford men's reserve crew, Isis, in the 1990 Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race.[2][3]

After graduating from Oxford, Cardinale received a fellowship to work in Tokyo for the Japan Institute of International Affairs, an affiliate of the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

Career

Throughout his 30-year investment career, Cardinale has partnered with founders and entrepreneurs to build some of the most iconic companies across sports, media and entertainment. Cardinale began his professional career at Goldman Sachs in 1992 and transferred to the firm's Merchant Banking Division in 1994 where he helped build the firm's investment business in Hong Kong, China and Singapore. Cardinale returned to New York in 1997 and was elected Partner in 2004.

During his 20-year tenure at Goldman,[4] Cardinale was responsible for investments across a range of industries and investment types. He worked with entrepreneurs and family business owners to build several successful multi-billion-dollar companies, including working closely with New York Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner to create the Yankees Entertainment & Sports ("YES") Network and partnering with the Yankees and Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones to create Legends Hospitality.[5][6]

Following Cardinale's retirement from Goldman Sachs, he launched RedBird Capital Partners, a private investment firm that integrates private equity investing with a hands-on business building mandate.[7] RedBird currently manages approximately $10 billion in assets, including properties and brands across the sports, media and entertainment industries.

The firm has recently expanded its investment portfolio by committing capital to several prominent companies such as Skydance Media, an American media content production company founded by David Ellison; Fenway Sports Group, a leading sports and entertainment company that owns the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool FC, the Pittsburgh Penguins and New England Sports Network ("NESN"); The SpringHill Company, a media production company co-founded by LeBron James and Maverick Carter; and the United Football League, an emerging professional football league, with Fox, ESPN and Dwayne Johnson. Additionally, the firm partnered with the National Football League ("NFL") to create EverPass Media, a sports media platform dedicated to commercial users, and founded Artists Equity alongside Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, a venture aimed to empower creators in the entertainment industry.[8][9][10][11]

Notable international investments include RedBird Capital's ownership of Italian professional football club AC Milan that competes in Serie A, where Cardinale is the owner and on the Board of Directors. The company additionally has a pending investment in iconic Hollywood studio Paramount.[12][13]

Personal life and philanthropy

Cardinale and his family live in Palm Beach, Florida.[14]

Philanthropically, Cardinale is a Trustee of the Mount Sinai Health System in New York City and a Trustee of the USRowing Foundation.[15] Cardinale is also a significant contributor to the Rhodes Trust, Harvard University, Phillips Andover Academy and Water.org.

Previously, Cardinale served on the board of the American Association of Rhodes Scholars and led one of the multi-state Selection Committees that awards Rhodes Scholarships annually. He also served on the board of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project, which promotes cultural entrepreneurship in the arts as well as innovative learning initiatives in inner cities.[16]

In 2023, Cardinale was the recipient of the Leonardo da Vinci Award in Finance at the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) 48th Anniversary Gala.[17] Cardinale was honored as Sports Business Journal's "Sports Executive of the Year," "Most Influential: Dealmakers & Disrupters" and annual "People Who Influenced Sports Business" in 2023, 2022 and 2020 respectively.[18][19][20]Inc. magazine named Cardinale and RedBird to its "Founder Friendly Investors" list in 2023 and the "PE 50" list in 2020.[21] In 2020, 2021 and 2022, Cardinale was also named to the "Variety 500" list.[22] In 2012, he was named one of Forbes "The Top 50 Deal Makers" in private equity.[23]
