Giorgio Angelotti is an Italian artificial intelligence researcher and physicist. He is the project lead of the Vesuvius Challenge.[1][2][3][4][5] In 2026, the project announced that it had used virtual unwrapping to read the surviving portion of a carbonized Herculaneum scroll, without physically opening it.[6][7][8]

Early life and education

Angelotti is from Naples, Italy.[1] He studied theoretical physics at Sorbonne University and the Polytechnic University of Turin.[9] In 2023, he completed a doctorate in artificial intelligence at ISAE-SUPAERO. His thesis concerned risk sensitive offline reinforcement learning and its application to human–robot interaction.[10]

Career

After completing his doctorate, Angelotti participated in the Vesuvius Challenge's open competition. He received several prizes for his technical contributions, including a $20,000 award for work that accelerated image processing. He later joined the project and has served as its project lead since June 2025.[1][11][8][12][4]

As project lead, Angelotti contributed to the Vesuvius Challenge's work on PHerc. 1667, the first Herculaneum papyrus virtually unwrapped end-to-end. His contributions included the development of an improved CT-scanning protocol and work on photogrammetry, mesh-parametrization algorithms and cloud-based processing.[8] He was also among the researchers who trained machine-learning models to enhance traces of ink in X-ray scans for analysis by papyrologists.[13][7][14]
