Giulia Ottonello (born 30 July 1984) is an Italian singer, actress and musical theatre performer. She rose to prominence after winning the second edition of the Italian talent show Amici di Maria De Filippi in 2003.

She subsequently pursued a career in musical theatre, appearing in Italian productions of Singin' in the Rain, Cats, Young Frankenstein, Cabaret, Rocky, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and The Sound of Music. In 2026, she was announced to play Amélie Poulain in the Italian-language production of Amélie.[1]

Ottonello has also worked as a singing voice actress for Disney productions, providing the Italian singing voice of Giselle, portrayed by Amy Adams, in Enchanted and Disenchanted.

Early life

Ottonello was born in Genoa. She began studying classical dance as a child and later trained in singing. Her mother, Laura Cappelluccio, was an opera singer and singing teacher. Ottonello also studied jazz, pop and R&B singing, musical theatre and tap dance.

Career

Amici and early career

In September 2002, Ottonello became a contestant on the second edition of Amici di Maria De Filippi. During the competition she performed songs including "Memory", "People" and "All by Myself", and also performed in dance and acting disciplines. She won the competition in 2003.

Following her victory, she appeared on Italian television programmes including Buona Domenica and the Maurizio Costanzo Show, and participated in the I-TIM Tour with other contestants from the programme. During the summer of 2003, she also appeared at several concerts by Gigi D'Alessio and performed with Gloria Gaynor.

Ottonello was subsequently signed to Sugar Music by record producer Caterina Caselli.[2]

She released the single "Spezzami il cuore", written by Moltheni, as well as an English-language version entitled "Permission", arranged and produced by Corrado Rustici.

Musical theatre and Disney

In 2004, Ottonello began working professionally in musical theatre with the Italian production of Singin' in the Rain, produced by Compagnia della Rancia and directed by Saverio Marconi, in which she performed alongside Raffaele Paganini.

She later appeared in the theatrical production Squali – Una storia vera un sogno.

In 2007, she began collaborating with the GnuQuartet after meeting the ensemble during a tribute concert dedicated to Genoese singer-songwriter Umberto Bindi.

The same year, Ottonello provided the Italian singing voice of Giselle, portrayed by Amy Adams, in the Walt Disney Pictures film Enchanted, performing the character's songs in the Italian-language version.[3]

In 2009, Ottonello returned to Amici for the special competition Amici – La sfida dei talenti, finishing third in the singing category.[4]

Later that year she was cast as Grizabella in the Italian production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats, directed by Saverio Marconi with choreography by Daniel Ezralow.[5]

The production toured Italy until 2011, with Ottonello performing the Italian version of "Memory".

She also created the theatrical project Eclettica with the GnuQuartet, reinterpreting songs associated with performers including Michael Jackson and Barbra Streisand.[6]

Recording and stage career

In 2012, Ottonello released her debut studio album, I miei colori, which contains eleven tracks.[7]

That year, she also joined the Italian production of Young Frankenstein. Her performance later earned her an Italian Musical Award for Best Supporting Actress.

In 2013, she appeared in the comedy film Fuga di cervelli, directed by Paolo Ruffini.[8]

From 2015 to 2017, she starred as Sally Bowles in Compagnia della Rancia's production of Cabaret, opposite Giampiero Ingrassia.[9]

2021–present

Ottonello returned to recording in 2021 with the single "L'ombra di un bonsai", written by Mirko Tremani and produced by Liz Vega.

In 2022, she released "Genova", a song about her hometown, followed by "Mentre il buio se ne va" with Ella Goda and "Disco rotto".

She also returned as the Italian singing voice of Giselle in Disney's Disenchanted (2022).

In 2023, she joined the cast of Disneiamo, a stage show celebrating the centenary of Disney, alongside Pietro Ubaldi, Stefano Bersola and Giorgia Vecchini.

She subsequently appeared in Rocky – Il musical from 2024 to 2026, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers during the 2025–2026 season and The Sound of Music in 2026.

In 2026, Ottonello was announced as Amélie Poulain in the Italian-language production of Amélie.[1] The production is directed and choreographed by Eugenio Contenti, with musical direction by Fabio Serri and an Italian translation of the book and lyrics by Alessio Fusi.[10]

The production is scheduled to tour Italy during the 2026–2027 theatrical season, including performances at Milan's Teatro Nazionale from 29 to 31 January 2027.[1]
