Global ID is a Swiss start-up specializing in biometric authentication using the vein network in the fingers of the hand. The company was founded in 2016.
Description
editGlobal ID was founded in Lausanne on July 12, 2016 by Lambert Sonna Momo.[1][2] [3] It is headquartered at the EPFL Innovation Park in Écublens (Lausanne area).[4]
Global ID is a Swiss start-up, developing market-leading biometrics technology based on multi-view vein recognition[5]. It comprises several software components and a hardware scanner.[6][7]
For its scientific research, Global ID relies on a consortium comprising the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), the Idiap research institute and the HES Valais for early prototyping[8]. Multi-view vein recognition techniques are developed with the Idiap research institute and encryption techniques with EPFL's LASEC laboratory managed by Serge Vaudenay.[9][10]
Global ID's current VenoScanner-F was miniaturized with the Centre suisse d'électronique et de microtechnique de Neuchâtel.[11] The scanner is assembled in Switzerland in canton of Jura[12][13][14]
The Romande Federation of Consumers conducted a survey on the reliability of the technology and the protection of data for individuals identified using Global IF's biometric systems.[15][16]
This technology is considered disruptive according to Europe 1 radio.[17]
Multiple scans of a finger's vein pattern generate a unique biometric key—a world first from Switzerland.[16][18]
Patents
editGlobal ID holds several patents worldwide, in the USA[19], Europe[20][21] and Asia.[22][23][24]
In 2022, Global ID became the first start-up in the EPFL Innovation Park to receive the Swiss Triple Impact label from B corp.[25]
Fields of application
editSovereign security
editThe Swiss army and its equipment supplier RUAG are studying the integration of this technology into their equipment.[26][27]
Healthcare
editThe canton of Jura hospital has carried out the first multi-view vein biometric authentication tests at the Delémont facility in 2019.[28][29][30] A new VenoScanner for the whole hand and contactless stabilization is supported by the Swiss Confederation with a grant of 1 million Swiss francs, notably for high-volume authentication and post-covid applications.[31][32][33][34]
In 2024, Global ID contracted with Project HOPE to add multi-view finger vein biometric authentication for the management of beneficiary profiles and data in Namibia.[35][36][37]
