GlossGenius is an American technology company providing business management software for businesses and independent professionals in the beauty and wellness sector to manage their operations.[1][2][3] The company facilitated about $2 billion in transactions annually in 2022[3] and was most recently valued at about $500 million.[4] About 100,000 businesses use its software, including beauty salons and spas.[1] The platform provides payment systems, appointment-booking, inventory and marketing services.[3] The company is headquartered in New York, NY.[5][6]
History
[edit]GlossGenius is run by identical twin sisters Danielle and Leah Cohen-Shohet, two Princeton University graduates.[2] At Princeton the two sisters developed a platform for digital receipts before both moving on to Goldman Sachs.[3] The company was founded in 2016[7][8] after Danielle, having worked as a freelance makeup artist,[9] became involved in software development and participated in Sephora's inaugural accelerator program.[3]
GlossGenius's users for its beta testing phase came from word-of-mouth testimonies[3] and the platform continues to obtain users primarily through word-of-mouth.[10] The company generates revenue from both subscriptions and commissions on payments.[11] The company has been described as taking a "vertical SaaS approach"[12] to its business model and for example launched a physical card-reader that integrates with its app in a partnership with Stripe.[13]
By September, 2022 the company's platform hosted some 40,000 businesses,[14][3] and facilitated approximately $2 billion in transactions annually.[5] By early 2024, the platform was used by over 60,000 salons and spas.[1] In 2025 the platform hosted approximately 100,000 businesses.[15] From 2021 to 2023, the company's employee count increased from about 100[13] to over 200.[16] As of September 2025 the company had 330 employees and reported more than $100 million in annual revenue.[17] These years coincided with the post-pandemic era, in which small-business owners increasingly used digital platforms.[10] Over 70% of the platform's users are women, including from underrepresented backgrounds, mirroring the demographics of the beauty industry as a whole,[3] with many of these small-business owners reporting increases in revenue post-adoption.[16]
Funding and valuation
[edit]Initially GlossGenius raised $2.8 million in capital from Techstars and angel investors in 2016.[18] The company bootstrapped for five years before raising additional capital.[19] In 2021 the company closed its Series A funding round raising $16.4 million,[20] including from Bessemer Venture Partners, Shopify's founder and CEO Tobias Lütke,[3] and Mindbody's cofounder Robert Murphy .[3][21] The company raised $25 million in its Series B round led by Imaginary Ventures and Bessemer Venture Partners, with participation from Left Lane Capital as well.[3] In 2023, it raised $28 million in Series C funding from L Catterton and LVMH,[1][16] bringing its total venture funding to $70 million.[22] In 2023 it was valued at $510 million.[23][4]
The company was included in Forbes' Fintech 50 list for 2023 and 2024,[24][25] as well as in CNBC's Top Fintech Companies of 2025.[26]
