The Governor-General's Programme for Excellence (GGPE) is a Jamaican civic initiative officially launched in 2014. It was created by His Excellency The Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen to consolidate two significant national programs: the Governor-General's Achievement Awards (GGAA) and the I Believe Initiative (IBI). The GGPE promotes excellence, community service, and leadership throughout Jamaica.

History

edit

The GGPE was established in February 2014 by Sir Patrick Allen as a cohesive framework that brings together two pre-existing initiatives: the Governor-General’s Achievement Awards (GGAA), founded in 1991, and the 'I Believe Initiative' (IBI), launched in 2011. The GGAA was introduced by then Governor-General, Sir Howard Cooke, to recognize Jamaicans making significant contributions to their communities despite challenging circumstances. In 2006, Sir Kenneth Hall expanded the GGAA to include youth and diaspora categories.

The I Believe Initiative (IBI), inspired by Sir Patrick Allen’s 2009 inaugural address, seeks to restore hope among Jamaican youth by focusing on family, education, and youth leadership. The GGPE continues to support these pillars through various projects, including the Youth Consultative Conference and the Summer of Service Scholarship Programme.
